Somehow my alarm got turned off in the middle of the night..I swear I set it for 5:30 before I went to sleep...but, I woke at 6:45...and realized I didn't have time for a pre-work run (when it would have been about 68 degress)...

..so I ran at lunchtime with Darin. 85F, 8 MPH breeze, partly cloudy. 51% humidity (felt like 86..or at least that's what weather.com thinks)

 Mile Time Avg HR
1 7:49 129
 2 7:40 143
 3 7:48 144
 4 7:51 154
 5 7:48 161
 6 7:52 164

I finished feeling not-so-great, and wondering why my HR climbed so much. When we started my HR was the usual 4 or 5 BPM below Darin's, by the time we finished mine was 5 or 6 above Darin's. I'm thinking I wasn't properly hydrated. I really haven't been very thirsty lately, but I know I need to drink more water. Drank plenty after the run, and this evening in prep for tomorrow's long run.

Maybe it was the lunch time heat. It looks like you were able to maintain a very consistent pace though.

From timp on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 10:57:42 from 68.166.26.238

I think you are right on about the hydration causing those issues. I have the same problem if I'm not watered-up right.

From Kathie on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 15:10:41 from 207.155.176.10

Keep up the hydration for sure in that heat! How did your run go today?

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 18:22:27 from 71.219.100.174

Crud, you have had some HOT runs this week. I do not know how you do it, it makes me dizzy!!!

Love the new picture, BTW! Snow is so appealing right now...but not running tights.

From Teena on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 13:59:17 from 67.177.20.13

I think it was the combination of both the heat and the lack of hydration -- both will stimulate your sympathetic nervous system and hence increase your heart rate (see how much I am learning in my physiology class -- my prof would be so proud). :)

How did your long run go?

I agree with Kelli ... cool new pic! :)

From MarcE on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 16:35:10 from 24.155.140.8

Yep, I'm pretty sure it was poor hydration and heat.

I ended up enjoying a rare Saturday morning sleep-in. It was storming again. After the rain passed, I decided to catch up on chores around the house...changed the oil in my car, fixed a fence, fixed a goat house, grated the driveway, brush-hogged a few acres, cleaned and vacuumed my car, played with the kids, and went to bed early.

Glad you like the new picture..I took at at Pike's Peak when I was in Colorado for the Steamboat Marathon in June. It reminds me of cooler temperatures! :-)

My husband is determined to "run" the Pikes Peak Marathon. Have you ever done that one??

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 16:56:55 from 71.219.100.174

Oh, and what is brush hogging?

From MarcE on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 22:05:58 from 24.155.140.8

Kelli - No, I've never run Pikes Peak..it was hard enough just walking around at the summit and taking pictures. It would be quite the challenge...I hear it is very difficult to get in..it fills up in about 5 minutes every year.

I'm not sure what they call it in Utah, but a brush-hog is a heavy-duty mower that attaches to the back of a tractor -- it's used for mowing down small bushes (brush) and tall wild grass. It's like lawn mowing, only a little more rugged! :-)

From Smooth on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 22:14:06 from 71.36.77.216

WOW, you worked hard yesterday, Mr. handy chore man!!!

There's an article in the Aug RW about how heat affects performance and HR. I won't run if the temp gets to high 80s. I am a wimp!

From MarcE on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 22:20:59 from 24.155.140.8

Smooth, before I started running so much I was always working on something, building something, fixing something, or doing something. I sometimes have to do a little catching up..to regain my sanity. I'm always amazed at how much you get done in the course of a day...if I only had half your energy!....

From MarcE on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 22:22:12 from 24.155.140.8

Oh..and I started reading the new Runners World...didn't get to the article on heat..after a while all those articles in there start to sound the same...I just buy it for the pictures! ;)

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 03, 2009 at 14:08:05 from 71.219.100.174

I read the article on NOT following the typical running advice---that was my favorite article (but I think it is in Septembers). You should make time to read that one, it gives me permission to break all the rules!!!

Okay, I need someone to brush hog my property before I get a notice from the city. We have not been able to find anyone to chop down the wild weeds.

I did not realize Pikes Peak was that popular. Who on earth would want to do that? I told Scott I would rife the tram up to the top and cheer him on, but I am not running that one!
