Ran on the MWRT alone -- 4 out and 4 back. Felt good.

VFF... sounds like it is a lot warmer down there

From MarcE on Tue, Jan 04, 2011 at 20:42:42 from 204.16.82.120

Rhett -- you know it. I didn't have any toe-socks with me, so I had to go au-naturale in the VFFs. If it was any colder, I probably would have lost feeling in the toes.

Kelli - Happy New Year to you, too! That's a good question. I'm coaching my boys soccer this Spring, so I'm not expecting a huge race season. The only marathon I have definitely planned for is Cowtown at the end of February -- which I'm (allegedly) leading the 3:40 group.

Kathie - for sure! I see you Utahns are barely above 0 degrees! Too cold for me!

From Kelli on Tue, Jan 04, 2011 at 21:35:41 from 71.219.84.215

You are a great LEADER!!! You are my pacing inspiration as I recall.

Coaching is a ton of work (for mom and dad). GOOD LUCK! This is the first year my husband has not coached 2 soccer teams and it has been very nice.

I decided to ramp it up a little on my last vacation day before heading back to work. My plan was to run with Darin and Dave at 7:00AM for 7 miles, then run some more on my own. I got a flat tire on the way to Darin's so, I got there as they finished. So, my run today was solo.

I'm running a 15K race on Saturday, so decided to go run the course -- twice. First time, forward, second time in reverse direction (not running backwards -- but running forward from finish to start :)

I made a wrong turn and ended up adding almost 2 miles to the first 9.3 miles (7:54/mi for 11.25 miles). I stopped at the car, downed a bottle of water and a Honey Stinger, then headed out for the second pass. I was making mental notes of various distances (2 miles, 1.5, 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25) from the finish line (just in case I have some kick left on Saturday..so I'll know exactly how much real estate I have left to cover)

I did quite a bit of walking on the the second 9.3 miles--especially when my total got above 17 miles. (keep in mind that my last marathon was June at Utah Valley---and my last run over 15 miles was at the end of July 2011 - El Scorcho). I had forgotten that stiff/tightening feeling -- and the sore feet. I guess there's a reason we ramp up for marathons. I took it easy -- today was about finishing the 20 miles, not about speed. I have about 7 weeks to be ready to run a 3:40 marathon at Cowtown (I'm pacing for the 3rd consecutive year...and it's not a gimme this year!) :)

Nice job. I can't believe how some of you can go out and run that far with not many long runs for several months. I've been running like a crazy man for a few months now and I was barely able to finish my 15 miler on Sunday. Impressive.

Good luck at the 15k this weekend.

It was a perfect day for a race. 38F, sunny, slight breeze.

Had no idea how I was going to do. I have been ramping up the miles this week, and even ran this course twice on Tuesday to become familiar with the terrain.

Someone said "Go", we started running, and about 10 seconds later the gun went off  :). I got into a good rythm early on, and felt pretty good. The plan was to go out at 7:30 first mile, then try to speed up -- and like 100% of all my other races, I DID NOT stick to the plan. I hit the first mile at 6:55, and felt fine. A few of my buddies were running with me, too. I was with Dave and Scott for the first 3 miles, then let them go ahead of me (It is much better to be passed by your friends early in a race, rather than late in the race). I kept about 50 yds behind Dave and Scott for the next few miles. Dave started pulling away, and I was kind of resigned to finishing right with Scott. But with 1 mile to go, I started gaining on Scott (this was an uphill section). Before I knew it I was passing Scott.

I finished strong -- passing Scott and 1 other runner in the last mile. Though Scott is in a younger AG, the other runner I passed was in mine -- which allowed me to take home 3rd in the 45-49 AG!!! Woohoo! Dave finished 1st in our AG about 40 seconds ahead of me.

My final time of 1:05:23 is a PR for 15K!! (My Garmin had 9.4 miles, AP: 6:57)

It was a fun race, and it was fun to see a few of my running buddies take home some hardware.

I think you have set a PR in every race you entered...how do you do that?

From MarcE on Mon, Jan 10, 2011 at 11:50:45 from 204.16.82.120

Thanks, Slick!

Kathie - I think the PRs are a direct result of running with my buddies who are right around my speed/endurance/fitness level. We like to compete against eachother and feed off each other's competitiveness. I'm convinced that I need to overcome some mental hurdles before I can realize my fastest races yet to be had. Last I checked you were still getting speedier, too!

Drove about an hour to run with Darin, Dave, and Scott this morning around Lake Grapevine. The plan was to finish the 20 miles at AP 8:15 (including stops). The weather was almost ideal - about 32 F, 5MPH wind, no clouds when we started at about 8 AM. The sun warmed things up nicely.

I decided to stop my watch ever time we stopped for drinks just to see what our actual running times were--the other guys kept their watches running through the stops.

Scott dropped out after 16 miles (he wasn't planning to do 20). Darin, Dave, and I finished our 20 miler at an AP of 7:54/mi -- and my Garmin logged 7:43/mi while we were running. I believe this might have been my fastest 20 mile training run ever -- and I didn't walk at all. This was quite a confidence builder for me -- as there are 35 days until Cowtown where I need to average 8:24/mi for the 3:40 pace group.

Next weekend is a step-back week -- where we're all running a half marathon in Dallas.

I took another "use or lose it" vacation day today. My wife droppe me off a Lake Weatherford while she went to a massage appointment. That gave me about 75 minutes to run before she'd be back to pick me up.

The weather was great. about 45, sunny, little wind when I started my run aroun 12:30pm.

I finished 1 lap around the lake and got about 1/2 mile into the next lap when she picked me up (1 lap is about 8 miles).

We ran some errands, then picke the boys up from basketball practice. I had her drop me off 2 miles from home so I could get in at least 10 miles for the day. I ran these last 2 at about 7:20/mi pace--quite a bit quicker than my leisurely pace around the lake.

Thanks, Maynard - I need to remind myself of how fortunate I am to have been employed with the same company for almost 20 years...with good benefits (and a fixed number of vacation days and sick days each year -- every Jan 31st our PTO (Personal Time Off) gets set back to 40 hours -- so if we don't use them, we lose them. As far as being fast like me, if I were you I'd aspire to be fast like Rhett or Tim or Andy...or ... :)

Yes, good benefits are awesome. Here at work we can build our leave up to 240 hours and anything over we have to use before the end of the year or we lose the extra hours. Luckily they don't reset it back to 40 hours.

Ran before work w/ Darin and Dave. From the start I felt sluggish, and let Dave and Darin go ahead. I'm missing my every-other-day rest days. I had another great run this morning in Dallas. I got up at 4:15, got dressed, drove 40 miles to Darin's house. Ate a banana and a piece of toast with honey and peanut butter for breakfast. Got the race at about 7:20 (8:00am start), picked up out bibs and event shirts, jogged a little and at about 8:01 we were off.

The weather was great. It was supposed to be about 45 at the start so I wore shorts, a singlet, and gloves. Not much wind at all.

The course circles White Rock Lake in Dallas, and has a few excursions back and forth through some various trails to make up the 13.1 mile course. For the most part it is flat. A few small ups and downs, and a .2 mile climb at the finish.

Before I started I was thinking that I would try to run around 7:00/mi for as long as possible. (my PR run at White Rock in December I ran about 7:08/mi -- so I figured with all the training I've been doing and the ideal weather conditions, I should at least try to beat that) (I also wanted to see if I could beat Darin and Dave, who both finished ahead of me at White Rock -- we're very evenly matched--on any given day, any one of us could win our little 3-man race)

After dodging a few walkers and joggers during the first mile, I managed a 7:03 -- it felt comfortable, so I picked it up a little and settled in with what I felt was a good pace. At about mile 5 Darin and Zachary (Darin's 17 yo son) caught me, and started to pass me -- as I settled in behind another guy..who I guess was slowing down without knowing it. So when D and Z went past, I decided to stick with them. About a mile later, I found myself ahead of them again and from the lack of breathing noises and foot pounding, I must have put a little distance between us (I never look back in a race).

At about mile 9 Zachary came flying by - he must have went from 7:00s to 6:30s -- I knew he would probably finsh ahead of me, so I wished him luck.

The last 4 miles seemed to take the longest. I was determined to maintain the pace. According to my Garmin I was at about 7:02/mi. I passed about 4 people in the last mile and finished that final .2 mile uphill climb feeling pretty strong with a 1:33:12 (NEW PR!!)

Zachary finished about 30 seconds ahead of me, and Darin, then Dave finished within a minute or two behind me. Today was my day.

It turns out I placed 3rd in our AG!!!! (which put Darin and Dave 4th and 5th..out of the hardware)

I took home a glass plaque that says "Age Group Winner".

It was a great day here in Texas - as I write this it's about 75F outside! I need to get outside and enjoy this little taste of Spring.

Teena- thanks! (it was 0.2 miles of uphill at the end...2 miles would have killed me! :)

Dale- Thanks, Dale! It's definitely more fun now that I'm able to run fast (for me) again!

Andy - Thanks! It is a fun rivalry. We're not elites (and we know it), but it is fun that we can compete with each other so hard (even in training runs), and once in awhile one or two of us takes home some hardware. Next race is Cowtown Marathon at the end of Feb - Darin and Dave will be going for BQs (3:35 and 3:30), while I'm pacing the 3:40 group -- I better not beat either or them on that day.

Well, that's a week for the record books! (NOT!) I was going to do 20+ mile today. The roads were still coated with ice, so I opted for the treadmill at work -- I only lasted about 15 minutes before I decided to run outside (it was probably 80 degrees inside the gym)

The temperature was about 40F when I joined Dave and Darin. I was trying to hold my MP (8:24), and had a hard time going that speed (I kept dipping below 8:00/mi). The ice and snow was melting, it was a slippery slushy mess in spots, and dry in others. I just wasn't feeling it today, so I packed it in after about 13. I'll try again tomorrow -- though we're expecting yucky weather again.

My kids were home from school Tuesday-Friday due to ice and snow. I worked from home all this week, and at a lot more than I should have -- especially because I didn't run all week. I hope I didn't cause too much damage. Next week will be better!

Dale - I hear ya. Treadmill is a last resort for me. It probably wouldn't have been so bad if I wasn't alone, and it was a little cooler. I'll probably hit the treadmill again this week..just to get a feel for my marathon pace.

I was mentally prepared to endure a lunchtime run on the treadmill, but Dave and Darin convinced me to run outside (28F, 5MPH wind, sunny). I'm glad I ran outside.

We started out with a 6:56 first mile. I'm not sure why we went so fast, I think Dave wanted to run the entire 8 miles at 7:00/mi (and he did). Ran 2 miles  to "the pond", then did 7 laps, then headed back. The weather wasn't bad, and the pace felt fairly comfortable (Half mary race pace)

It looks like our final long run before a 2 week taper will be on Sunday. We're thinking about racing a 5K on Saturday morning...it might be a Saturday morning decision for me (I'd hate to injure myself this close to Cowtown - 17 days out)

Not a PR by any stretch, but I was happy only finishing 8 seconds behind my buddy, Dave.

Once I loosened up (after about 3 miles), I felt pretty good. The weather was great (a little windy), but temps were in the low 40s. After 16, Darin had to leave, so Dave and I ran 2 more cooldown miles (about 8:00/mi).

1 week 'til Cowtown. Ran an easy 10 miles this morning in the heat, humidity, and wind of north Texas. It wasn't too bad, and I'm hoping conditions improve by next week. It was about 60 at 7:30am, and 90% humidity. The 8:20 pace I was trying to hold was a little tough going into the wind, but fine otherwise.

This afternoon I met Darin at the start of the Cowtown Marathon and we rode our bikes over the new course. It took us almost 3 hours to cover the 26.2. The course isn't too bad. lots of litte ups and downs and 1 or 2 significant uphills (mile 9 is the biggest, but nowhere near Veyo at SGM). It was good to see the new course, at least now I know what to expect.

The biggest concern now is for raceday weather. I'd hate to have Tom Slick come all the way from Sandy City to Ft Worth for a hot, humid race. Here's to hoping for 40's, low wind, and overcast skies!

I can come up with lots of valid excuses for having my second slowest marathon (out of 20), but the truth is, I just wasn't mentally or physically prepared for today's Cowtown Marathon.

He never ceases to impress me, as he is so dedicated to his training and his pre-race routine.

I didn't sleep at all last night, and felt a little feverish...but, I decided to give my 3:40 pacing a shot. The temp was 67F and 90% humidity, with S 15-20 MPH wind. I should be able to run in these "local" conditions. I was more worried for Tom Slick.

I was right on schedule up until the 18th mile, when I made an unscheduled pit stop. I handed the "3:40" sign to one of the group, and said I would catch up. I knew, I wouldn't catch up. I was just feeling aweful. I walk-ran the last 7 miles...totally dejected. I guess some days just aren't your day.

It was a little encouraging to see a few people from our pace group after the race..and they thanked me for the steady effort for the first 18 miles. One of the women, ended up speeding up for a 3:35, and the guy I handed the sign to finished at about 3:41 (I told him to keep the sign as a sourvenir for his first marathon.)

Even though I had a bad day, it was a great weekend. Hanging out with Tom Slick, seeing lots of running buddies, and adding another finisher medal to the collection (3rd of 5 to complete the "Cowtown Star").

I think my finishing time was around 3:53 -- I'm not in a hurry to look at the Garmin.

Don't let Marc fool you all! He really had a great day at the Cowtown. Maybe his timing was a bit off but his heart was as big as Texas and he was wearing it on his sleeve serving a huge pack runners in his pace group. And all the other runners in the area know and respect Marc for the fine man that he is, not to mention what a great runner he is!!!! Congrats on a run so well done under brutal conditions! And to think that the Texans thought this was a really good day as compared to what it has been in the past!!! 75 degrees, 90% humidity, 20 mile per hour winds over all of the course, half if it in your face, at least it was cloudy!

From DaleG on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 12:06:09 from 67.2.27.198

Hey Marc, sorry about the troubles, but at least you were able to hand off the pacing duties to someone. Other than that, it sounds like you all had a great time.

I am sure you had a bug or something like that, you are such a strong runner. We all have had bad races, my goal race however is your bad race.

Tim - thanks. I had a tough day..I think next year, I'll run it for fun! The pace group gig is a whole lot of pressure that I really don't thrive on. We'll see if they even ask me back next year.

Slick - you made the weekend a heck of a lot more fun than it would have been. Thanks for hanging out with the family and enduring the boys' baskeball and soccer games. I'm sorry I almost totally sabotaged your race by forcing you to eat Uno's deepdish pizza with hot peppers at 8:00pm the night before a race..and a special thanks for the tums at 2AM! You da man!

Dale - Thanks. All in all the bad parts will fade in my memories, but the good times will stick around for a while!

RP - Thanks!

Kathie - funny you should say that. I've been coughing all day, runny nose, and chest congestion. I tried for weeks to fight off the cold or whatever my family had..it's now my turn!

Thanks all for the kind remarks.

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Mar 01, 2011 at 12:34:30 from 204.113.19.47

The good thing about a less than ideal race is that it gives you perspective and empathy. The latter being especially useful for parents and pace group leaders.

Congratulations on toughing it out and finishing with all body parts in tact and still functioning.

How about leading a slow pace group? Something that you could do w/o thinking twice about?

From MarcE on Tue, Mar 01, 2011 at 15:25:38 from 204.16.82.120

Fly - yep, that's true. I can definitely empathize. With all the PRs I've been running this year, and more mileage than the past 2 years, I thought 3:40 was definitely doable. I'm not sure how slow would have been slow-enough. Even if I started at a 9:00/mi pace, would I have been able to maintain that? Not so sure. 10:00? 11:00? I don't know. I've got a cold or something now..I think I was just starting it as the gun went off!

So Marc - what's up next for you?

From MarcE on Wed, Mar 02, 2011 at 10:37:27 from 204.16.82.120

Tim- Good question. I'm coaching soccer, and really need to get my garden in. My buddies (Darin and Dave) are toying with the idea of running another point-to-point marathon in Oklahoma in about 2 weeks. Maybe I'll run the half?? I've got some sort of cold now, so I'm taking it easy -- and actually am going to take a sick day today and go to bed. I'll see how rationally I can plan my running this year once I've recovered and my head is clear again.

Last night I received an email from the Pace Group manager from Cowtown..he wanted to know if I would like to pace the 3:50 group at Big-D on April 10th. Without fully thinking it through I accepted. I've read your report on Cowtown! I'm late at commenting! I know it's history now, but I think you did an awesome job pacing your group through all those miles under such cruddy weather and condition! If you hadn't been sick, you would not had to pass the baton (aka pacer sign) onto another guy! You were a great host and friend to Slick and many many others! I salute you and admire you greatly!

Now, it sounds like you wanna redeem it at Big-D. I'd say go for a fast one! You're ready!!! Let your other buddies take the pacer duty this time! :)

Hey Marc, Hows Lloyd the "Kid" doing? I've been worried about him? And how are you doing?

Wow, your pacing the Big-D in April, wish I wasn't doing Boston so I could come do the race with you and your pace group!!!! I guess I'll just have to gear up to run White Rocks in December with you, are you pacing a group at that one, Hopea, hopea, hope!!!!!

I got out this morning and did a 12 mile recovery run....My AP was at 9 minute miles with my fastest at a 6.3 minute mile. Life is returning....

From MarcE on Sun, Mar 06, 2011 at 16:26:09 from 204.16.82.120

Smooth - I'm still leaning toward finding a replacement. Pacing is just a little more pressure than I would like ot place on myself. I'd like to get a BQ for 2012 under my belt (3:30) -- but to realistically get in I'd need a 3:20 or better. I might just have to come out to Utah to have a shot at it.

Dale - my gut is saying...feed me! :)

Lloyd - Lloyd the kid is doing great. We actually had a friend of ours adopt him yesterday (she has a boy who is home schooled and willing to feed him 4 times a day. We still have visitation rights anytime :). BTW - the weather has been perfect for running ever since last Sunday. We just picked the wrong day to race. Today's run was at noon, and it was 50F, no wind, and sunny. Felt great!

The plan was going to get up at 5:30 and run 16 w/ Darin and Dave (1 hour away). When the alarm went off, and I saw it was 32 degrees out, I decided to go back to bed, then go to church with the family.

After church, I went to the trail for a solo run. I had been feeling a little "tweak" on the right knee since before Cowtown (I think I did something playing soccer with the boys), so I wanted to take it easy today, and had no firm plan on mileage. Since I didn't bring anything to drink, I figured I'd just run 5 out and 5 back, then drink something at the trailhead, and if I felt up to it, I'd tack on a few more miles. 10 miles felt great, so I decided to call it quits and maybe do a longer mid-week run this week. The knee felt fine, a little tenderness on the left Achilles, but other than that, felt great!

Yep...that's my cross training. The boys are really getting into gardening. I built some raised bed boxes for the garden this year, they each have their own box. We caught a tiny garden snake and put him in one of the boxes (and gave him a little garden shovel for shelter).

I'm thinking about running a 5K race this Saturday before our Soccer game.

I still haven't decided on whether to run the Half or Full at Big-D on April 10th...if I don't run at least 18 miles this weekend, it will be the half.

I may be cutting back my miles a little this summer while I try to bring a little more balance to my life. I took some time off from running last year and I came back stronger. I envy all of you who can run 50+ miles week after week after week.

Race: Joe's Run - Ft Worth (5 Miles) 00:20:09, Place overall: 21, Place in age division: 2
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
0.003.103.10

Earlier this week my running buddy, Dave, decided to put together a team of 5 to compete at a local 5K in Ft Worth. This is an annual event run to raise money for an AIDS/HIV charity. The trophies for this event are wooden parrot statues, and we thought it would be cool to earn one of those cherished baubles. After looking through the results from last year's race, it appeared that if we could put 5 of our friends together on a team, we would have a shot at the "team" championship. So, we signed up.

Race morning was a bit on the warm side, but comfortable, with a strong breeze from the South. 65F is fine for a 5K, just glad I wasn't running a half or full marathon in it.

The 10K started at 8AM, and the 5K was supposed to start at 8:30, so at about 8:10 our team went for about a 1 mile warmup jog, then did a few strides. At about 8:20, we hear "1 minute to start", so we rushed over to the crowded starting area and worked our way though the crowd to try to get near the front. There was a team of kids from a local running club, and they were everywhere..especially near the front. When the horn sounded I had to do a little weaving to avoid running some joggers over.

The plan for today was to try to run 20:00. The plan was to go out easy in the first mile (6:40ish), then speed up from there. I drove the course before the race, and realized that the first mile was by far the easiest, and most downhill, so I ran what felt like an easy pace and crossed the 1st mile make at about 6:17. I felt good, and I could see the first hill up ahead. At about 1.5 I caught up to my friend, Ruthie, at about the same time Dave caught up to me and passed me. I decided to try to stick on Dave's tail. The 2nd mile was 6:30. I knew the 3rd mile was going to be a bit tougher, as there's a fairly steep hill to climb, and then a turn into the south breeze to the finish. I stuck behind dave, maybe 10 yards or so. Close enough to keep him in range. Up the hill we trudged, passing 1 or 2 people. Once we crested the hill, there was a little relief on a slight downhill. At about a third mile to the finish we turned into the wind and headed south. At this point, I was still feeling OK..and better yet, Dave was still 10 yards ahead. I'm so used to running with Dave, and always finishing right behind him. I finished 8 seconds behind Dave at our last 5K in Feb, and just as I was about to resign myself to another finish behind him, I decided to go for it. I don't get too many opportunities to be within striking distance this close to the finish. Today was going to be my day. Dave was going to eat my dust. With about 200 yards to go, I made my move. I kicked it down a gear and sprinted past Dave. I'm pretty sure he was shocked to see me, and by the time he realized what happened I was a few yards ahead. He kicked it in, too. I finished ahead of Dave!!!!! Woohooo!!! My day was made!!!

When the results were posted, I went over to see how we did in our age group. Imagine my surprise when I saw Dave had finished 20th overall and I was 21st. In the shuffle to get to the starting line, I worked my way up a little further than Dave. So, even though I finished ahead of Dave (gun time), he beat me with chip time! The margin 0.6 seconds (yes about 1/2 a second). Dagnamit! :)

It turns out that our training group of Dave (20:08.4), Darin,(20:21) and I(20:09.0) took the top 3 spots in our AG (45-49) out of 44. We each received  a progressively larger parrot statue for our efforts. It turns out that our team placed 3rd overall -- out of the trophies (only 1st and 2nd for team division).

I'm really not at all upset that Dave beat me (by 0.6 seconds), and that our team didn't place. In fact, it's kind of funny, and something I'll remember for a long time (Dave won't let me forget it, I'm sure :) It was a fun day, and I was happy to have a strong finish -- it seems like it's been a while. Sub 20:00 is still within reach, so we'll have to go for it again soon....and next time maybe I'll finish ahead of Dave. ;)

Wow Marc, Great race and what a super exciting race report. Sounds like you had way too much fun running this fine 5K......Hows the training coming for the Big-D in April??

I really love you words to live by at the top of your blog!!!!!

So I need to ask: Did you shave before the race? If not, those extra wiskers cost you 7/10ths of a second ... I am certain of it!!! :)

Seriously though, sounds like you had a ton of fun!

Great job to you and your friends! :) :) :)

From MarcE on Mon, Mar 28, 2011 at 22:40:58 from 204.16.82.120

Slick..the training for Big-D has been well...you can see the numbers. It's looking like a half marathon at this point. I'm cutting back the miles and going to enjoy some of those shorter races!

Thanks, Tim...we both know I beat him. Only his parrot was bigger than mine (story of my life).

Teena - I bet you're right! If I had shaved, or run straight over one of those kids at the front of the pack instead of going around, I might just have gotten the .7 seconds that I needed! Thanks.

Kathie - Next time I'll have to lose him from the start and hang on at the end. I'm usually faster when I'm leading (I'm fueled by the fear of someone catching me from behind).

Because I didn't run yesterday, and Darin and Dave ran 800m intervals, I decided to run 2 x 800s at 6:00/mi pace, while Darin and Dave headed back. I caught Dave on the way back..he was walking. Said he thinks he pulled a calf muscle. :( I walked the last mile back to work with him, while we chatted about our plans to BQ this year. He's considering TOU....is that a good race to BQ at?

Ty texted me at 7am and asked me if I was running today. I was kinda thinking about it, but his text got my butt out of bed. I met him at the trailhead at 8am for an easy 10 miler. We started with an 8:30 mile, then sped up a little to about 8:00s. At 9 miles our avg pace was 8:05, I told Ty I was going to run the last one fast to see if I could get my avg under 8:00 for the 10 miler. I needed about 7:15. I was a little surprised when I check my watch at the end and ran a 6:17 last mile with an AP of 7:54.

Next weekend Big-D Half Marathon. We'll see if the weather dictates a PR attempt.

A friend of mine told me about this race a few weeks ago. It's a new race to raise money for a local school PTA. As it is 10 minutes from my house, AND I wasn't going to be in Boston this year, I signed up my two boys and I.

The weather was perfect. 45F, low wind, low humidity. Some people seemed a bit overdressed wearing long tights, long-sleeved shirts, and gloves.

The fun run for the boys went off at 8AM. My 8 year-old (Ethan) took off to the front of the pack, while my 7 year-old and I took a more leisurely pace. The fun run was an out-and-back loop, with a water stop at the 1/2 mile mark. Ethan ran most of the race, with some walk breaks, and finished in about 10 minutes. Christian and I walked when we had to...and finished a few minutes behind. I was proud of both my boys. That was my warmup.

The 5K started at about 8:30. I lined up on the front row, surrounded by grammar school kids. Where were the adults? It seems like the few adults that were there opted to start back behind the kids. Not me..I planned to get ahead of these kids before I ran one over.

The race started, and I quickly got up to my 5K race pace. I was in 3rd place at about a quarter mile, and then we started the long, gradual hill, where I took the lead. I glanced at my watch and saw I was at about a 5:45 pace..which, at this point in my running life, is not sustainable for 3.1 miles, so I dialed it back a little. I crossed the first mile at 6:15. That wasn't so bad, and I was in first place. I never looked back, but I could tell there was no one behind me. I got to follow the motorcycle cop!!!! Yes, the motorcycle cop was leading ME! At the 1.55 mile mark, I turned around and headed back. This was my first view of the chase pack...which consisted of a guy about my age about 30 seconds behind me, and nobody even close to him. I thought to myself that I could possibly win this thing. Is he just holding back?

The second mile as a 6:38. I was heading up hill now. I knew that with 1/2 mile to go it would be a nice gradual downhill to the finish, so I just chugged along. I saw a few of my friends coming the other way, which is always fun!

I never looked back and just ran my own race. The last 1/2 mile seemed fairly easy. As I rounded the corner, someone said "here comes the leader", and a few people clapped, as I crossed the finish line (no tape..I always imagined there was a tape to break...but I guess not :). 20:10. I had just won my first race since grade school!!!!

My oldest boy, Ethan, ended up 3rd overall in the fun run and won his age group and got a medal. Christian was a little disappointed that he didn't get anything. But, I got the "Overall Fastest Male in the first ever Porcupine Promenade" 2 foot trophy!!!  (Which I am entrusting to Christian to take good care of for me....it made him happier.)

Most of my other buddies that were there (not my usual speedy buddies from work, but rather the up-and-coming speedsters from my church) took home some hardware, too! It was a fun day, and I'm grateful all the really speedy guys were running another race in Ft Worth or Boston! :-)

Thanks for the birthday wishes. My birthday didn't include any official running. The day started with me and boys helping some people from our church with yardwork (I was going to run a 5K, but because I'm not quite over the sinus thingy, I thought it might be better to help some others and teach my boys a little about charity). After the yard work, we had our last soccer game of the season. We won 2-1!!! Nice to finish the season on a high note. I distributed trophies and achievement certificates to the boys, and we ate cupcakes. Then we walked around downtown Weatherford and stopped in several antique shops. We finished the day by going over to our friends house, cooked out and sat around an open fire while the kids played in the pool. It was an excellent birthday (#46 for those of you counting...not a new age group :)

It was windy, and about 70...but I just wasn't feeling it. (I ran a fast 6 miler on Thursday than I did at this race). Maybe it was the 2 bratwursts I had for dinner the night before??? It wasn't my day.

I'm not entering this as a Race Report, because I don't feel like I raced it. :)

I WON THE ST GEORGE LOTTERY...4 for 4!!!! (I'm guessing it is not totally a random drawing). This means I can totally slack off this summer. With about 100 days 'til SGM, I'll pick up the training, but for the next month or so, I'm going to enjoy shorter mileage and short races.

Darin and his son, Zachary were planning to run this race, and seeing that the weather was supposed to be unseasonably cool (for Texas), I somehow I talked myself into driving the 40 miles to run it with them. Dave, who has been cutting back on his running was there, too. Darin and I believed it was our day to beat Dave (who has beat us in most other races we've been in this year).

A week ago Darin schooled me at a 10K, by about a minute. I was hoping for redemption.

It was about 50 degrees when the gun went off at 7:30. Abouta 15MPH NW breeze. I took off at a comfortably painful pace, one that I was hoping I could maintain for 3.1 miles. Darin and Dave were somewhere behind me. The race had the most turns of any 5K I've ever run, meandering through a mall at the start, then out on the perimeter of the mall, then some meandering to the finish. Check out the Garmin. It wasn't too bad, but I thought it was going to be a slow day because of all the corners...and there was some wind (I don't like wind). Maybe 15 MPH - it's my friend when it's behind me, but when I feel it against me, I mentally start checking out.

I was doing OK. I managed to pass the first place female and about 1 mile into the race, and stayed ahead of her by just a little bit. I kept hearing her fans telling her that she was the first female (I'm pretty sure she was a highschooler).

At about the 2.5 mile mark, we turned into the wind and up a slight incline. That's when Darin passed me. Dangit! I was running out of gas, and he turned on the after burner. I just let him go and hung on 'til the finish. I crossed the line at 19:54 (I forgot to stop my watch..so ignore the Garmin time)

Darin finished about 20 seconds ahead of me (yes, I choked badly, losing 20 seconds to my training buddy, my peer, my equal, in the last .6 miles of the race). I'm a little bummed that I couldn't finish stronger, but I'm happy that Darin placed 1st in our AG, and I was second. It turns out Dave was only about 20 seconds behind me...and I ended up beating the 2 top women finishers by 2 seconds! (They must have been gaining fast...they had identical time 19:56)

We hung around for the awards, and this race, even with a couple hundred entrants gave out certificates and goody bags to the 1st place finishers in each AG. It was a little disappointing to go home empty handed after another podium finish, but that's OK. It was a nice morning for a race and I went sub 20:00 for the first time in about a year! I'll take it

I just read a report HERE. I didn't realize that men and women were competing for the same awards. That stinks even more...especially for the women. I'm sure they'll straighten it out next year. I believe people who organize races should be veterans of a few races, or at least consult a few veterans to find out what works at most races, and what people expect for their entry fee. The awards aren't a very big deal, but race directors need to be clear in their advertising, and by all means, separate the men from the women.

Well, this was my first run in the past 4 days. My wife went to visit her sister for the weekend, so I got the opportunity to see what being a single parent is like. So, like any father of 7 and 8 year old boys...what did I do? I bought the boys a go-kart. Yes, a little spontaneous, but I had to follow through with something that slipped out of my mouth. Something about how when I was a boy, I always wanted a go-kart...and I saw the little gears turning in their little heads. And before you know it, we were buying a go kart. We spent the majority of the weekend riding around our property making trails. The goats didn't seem to mind too much....anyways we had a blast and...it seems like I have a new tool for getting them to do their chores. "No riding until your room is clean" ...until the dishes are put away... genius".

Anyways, today's run was a short one with Darin just after a thunderstorm passed. It wasn't too bad. We got progressively faster.

I've been working on my short game lately. Very few long runs, but added speed work once a week. I've been enjoying running 5Ks this year -- 5Ks are a whole different breed than halfs or full marathons.

My buddy, Darin has been a little faster than me, lately. He beat me in the last 2 races we've run, and I had one goal in mind at this race...to finish ahead of Darin.

I arrived at the schedule 8AM race at about 6:30, as the volunteers were setting up. I paid for my entry, then decided to check out the course. I had plenty of time to walk/jog the course as a warmup, and was pleased to see it was mostly flat. The start is a very gradual uphill for about 1/4 mile, followed by a slight downhill for about 1/8 mile, then completely flat until the last 3/4 mile -- with the 1/8 mile uphill, followed by a 1/4 mile gradual downhill to the finish. I knew if I could somehow be ahead of Darin with 1/4 mile to go, he wouldn't be catching me (I like downhills :))

It was about 75 degrees, and sunny at start time. The race started promptly at 8AM. During the 1st mile I was almost surprised at how good I felt -- 6:05, and I knew Darin was behind me somewhere. At about 1.5 miles a guy passed me, so I kept him in my sights. I crossed the 2nd mile in 6:18 (this mile was flat and a little into a 5-10 MPH breeze, which felt good). Darin was still somewhere behind me (but, I was afraid to look back :)) At about 2.5 miles I caught and passed the guy who had passed me a mile earlier. I was still feeling good...thinking "If Darin catches me, I'll have a little left in the tank to battle back). I turn the corner and headed up the slight incline with about .3 mile to go, then crested the top and saw the finish line..and kicked it up a notch. There was nobody in range to catch, and I still didn't look back. But, I could tell that nobody was close behind (you can usually tell by the people standing on the sides if someone is making a move). I crossed the line in 19:35..my best 5K this year, and only about 8 seconds shy of my all-time PR! Darin finished 9 seconds behind with 19:44 (1st in our AG)...and I regained the top spot of our little running group (Dave, the other member of our lunchtime running club ran a different 5K on Saturday and finished in 20:20...he's still recovering from a calf issue). I ended up 6th overall, winning the Overall Masters' award.

I ended up winning a plaque (for overall masters 1st place), and a $100 gift certificate to the local community pool (which I gave back, as I live about 40 miles away and really couldn't use).

It was a fun morning, and I know Darin will be gunning extra hard for me next race! (I really need to start ramping up for SGM, soon, but am having lots of fun with the short races!)

Hope that start up hip pain goes away, which I know that it will! Looks like your getting out and getting you SGM training cycle going. I sure hate running in the heat. are you getting any relief running early early in the morning? I've got to get out about 4:am to get into the 60's for any relief?

Keep me up to date on your flight plans for SGM, I've already got the room from 9/30/11 to 10/2/11 ... TYI

Went trail riding with mountain bikes with Darin and Curtis. This is the first time I've ridden on trails in...well, I can't remember. Curtis had an extra bike he loaned me. The trails were narrow and winded through lots of trees which provided nice shade. The surface ranged from hard-packed dirt, to sand, rocks, roots. It was a lot of fun, and I was happy that I wasn't holding Darin or Curtis back and was able to keep up. After 2 hours of riding we ended our workout with about a 2 mile trail run. It was about 95 degrees during the run, but it didn't feel too bad in the shade. It was a great workout and a welcome change of pace.

I'll call it 8 miles.

Ran trails at Lake Grapevine w/ Darin and Dave. I could really get used to single-track running. You really need to pay attention to EVERY STEP - you have to watch for roots, rocks, branches, sand on every step. I had no problems and got a great workout! I'm looking forward to the next time we hit the trails (on bike or foot).

From MarcE on Thu, Jul 14, 2011 at 23:15:35 from 204.16.82.120

Smooth - yes, I've been eating fresh veggies from the garden for several weeks. Cucumbers, tomatoes, melons, onions, radishes, peppers, and squash did well this year! If I can keep the tomatoe plants alive through the hot summer, I think I'll have a second crop in the fall. I just planted pumpkin seeds.

Tim- the cheap shoes are doing well. My hip pain is subsiding (maybe it's from NOT racing for the past few weeks). I think it's vital to rotate at least a few pairs of shoes between runs.

Rhett - I'm doing my best. SGM will be here soon. I ordered my plane tickets -- so I guess I'm locked in now. There's only one way back to St George from the starting line for me. I wish I was more motivated -- but, did I mention it is hottttt here. :)

My Brush With Bush

Darin texted me on Friday night to go trail running with Jo, Dave, and him at the same place we ran last week. I was to meet at his house at 6:00. I woke up at 4:40 and, as usual, weighed the pros and cons of going back to sleep with the benefits of running. And is the case usually when someone else is waiting on me, I decided to get my running clothes on and head to Darin's (about an hour away from me).

When I got to Darin's, Jo was there, but Dave had to back out due to him having to take his daughter to a soccer game or something. No biggie.

On the ride to the trailhead, Darin said that plans had changed, as the bridge to the place we ran last week was under construction, so we opted to head to the trail on the other side of the lake that he, Curstis, and I mountain biked from 2 weeks ago.

As we arrived at the parking area at the trailhead, there was a rather large guy wearing a white polo shirt and slacks blocking some of the shady parking spots (shade in Texas this time of year is a precious commodity). I was thinking, "that's kind of rude". So after we parked a little further down, I went and talked to the guy. I asked him if there was some special club ride going on -- as there were a couple top of the line Treks waiting on stands. He said, "yep, local club". And that was about that..

Just as we were about to head out on the trail for a 6 mile loop, two Suburbans pulled up. The few others at the trail head started murmuring that it was "him". It was George W Bush. Yes, the 43rd president of the United States. He was there to go for a mountain bike workout with about a dozen others (I'm sure some were security and some were local bike riders or friends of his). And Jo, Darin, and I were right there. He shook all our hands and looked genuinely excited to be our there for a workout on a hot summer morning. He said to Darin, Jo, and I, "you're the lean group" (or something like that).Within minutes, Mr. Bush's entourage passed us on their mountain bikes as we stopped running to step aside to let them pass. Mr. Bush was cruising right along at a nice clip. How cool was that!?

After a few minutes, we started our jog, just a little star struck from our brief encounter. We chatted on the run and wished we had thought to take a picture. Darn it! Nobody's going to believe us!

At about the 1.5 mile point, the single track trail crossed a park road with a port-o-let. Jo had to make a pit stop. I saw the van that had the bikes, and the big guy that I had talked to earlier. Darin and I walked over to him, and I said "I'm sorry for being a bit of a jerk back there.". He said "You weren't a jerk".  I felt the need to apologize...so I did. We chatted for a few more seconds, then got back on the trail.

The trail system we were on has about a 14 mile loop with traffic designated as "one way". At about 3 miles out we hopped on the trail heading back toward the parking lot. Jo had to get back to teach an aerobics class. After we got back to the parking lot, we took a few pictures of ourselves with Darin's smartphone and said goodbye to Jo.

Darin and I saw that the Mr Bush's SUVs were still there, so we thought maybe we might have a chance to get a photo with him if we could be there when he finished his ride. We ended up hopping on the trail, headed in the opposite direction. At about 1.5 miles out, we encountered the entourage...it seemed like they picked up a few more riders on their train. We stepped off the trail and watched them pass. Then we followed them. They put a little distance on us, but we thought that perhaps we might still only be a couple minutes behind them when they finished, and if we were lucky we might meet him again and get a picture.

Sure enough, as we finished. There he was, mingling with about a dozen people at the trail head. I asked him if he'd mind if we took a few pictures. He said "Sure, go ahead", and he even congratulated Darin and I for a great run in the heat. Believe me, the feeling was mutual. Mr Bush had just celebrated his 65th birthday a few weeks ago, and I was very impressed by his commitment to fitness, and his ability to ride those narrow, even dangerous trails. It was a very cool encounter, one I doubt I will ever forget.

Here's my picture with "W":

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1121750&l=70e976126d&id=1837428836

I feel really bad that Dave had to change his plans for a family commitment, and that Jo missed out on the photos after we finished. Maybe there with be a "next time".

Yup...Darin was leading, and I kept trying to push him. He told me to go on ahead...but I didn't want to look too much like a stalker, so I held back so we arrived together.

I ordered an 8x10 for my wall, a few 5x7s for my parents, and a photo mug for my mom (a real fan of both me and the ex-president).

For some reason that run on Saturday gave me a boost in enthusiasm for running -- that was much-needed lately!

Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of him (I won't bore you with my politics). But, after meeting him, and seeing him close up, early on a Saturday morning, riding a mountain bike, on a narrow single-track through the woods, at age 65, taking time to chat with the common-folk...he bumped up a few notches on my popularity scale. I'm tempted to read his book..

I did not even get e reply out of Teena, she must be super busy!!!! I egged her on pretty good, nothing beat politics!

Why I am a fan of George Bush: he runs faster that Bill Clinton! Seriously, the guy is an athlete. His security had to ride bikes when they would go with him on runs, they could not keep up with him. I know this to be a fact.

I would be happy to see any former President (aside from one), it would make me all giddy. A President is a President. Heck, I would cartwheels for a Vice President (aside from one)!

From MarcE on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 14:01:16 from 204.16.82.120

That's funny, Kelli. I don't think I've shaken hands with any other celebrity...ever. Not even a town mayor (OK, I shook the hand of the Mayor of Waco at a marathon), but no sports figures, actors, etc.. None. I remember reading about him running 7 minute miles on his daily runs, back when I couldn't run 7 minute miles, and thought maybe it was an exaggeration. But, I'm thinking he probably did run them. When I send my photo to him for an autograph, I'll let him know if he ever needs a running buddy to just give me a call...I'll let you know how that goes. :)

The boys did great at tennis camp this week. Ethan (8) had to play in the final tournament with the older kids 11 and up, and lot both of his matches. Christian (7), who is rather used to his older brother beating him at everything, had his day and won all his matches! I'm proud of both of them.

I'm gunna step out on a limb here and ask if your hydration was up to par while you were out running? I know in my own case this morning, I took two 16.9 oz bottles of water out with me and I don't feel like it was enough.Especially in the heat were all running in at the present time. I had the very same exact thing happen to me that you just experienced. "It was all because of a lack of hydration"!!!!!

From now on, in the heat I will be going out the night before and stashing more hydration along my training routes to supplement what I carry.......

Way to start the week off with a good strong 12 miler.......here comes SGM!

From MarcE on Sun, Jul 31, 2011 at 14:57:10 from 204.16.82.120

Warning--this blog may contain a little too much information (TMI).

Slick, you are absolutely correct. I drank a glass of water before I headed out the door to drive to the trail(probably 12 oz), a few sips of PowerAde at the start of the run (about 6 oz). I stopped at mile 2 for a pit stop..felt like I had to go, but not much came out. All was fine then. I carried a 12 oz bottle with me and finished it before I finished the first 6 miles. Sipped a few more sips of PowerAde, refilled the 12 oz bottle, and headed out for another 6 with Ty. I drank that bottle by the time we were done...and felt like I had to pee..but nothing but blood. I think I was dehydrated -- probably from the past few days. I read in my Noake's Running book about some times if the bladder completely empties, it could rub on itself and start bleeding. Well here it is 4 hours post-run, and my kidneys are back to functioning and no noticeable redness in the two times I've gone since...I'll keep an eye on it, and just be sure to hydrate more carefully going forward. If it was accompanied by kidney or bladder pain...I probably would have gone to the doc. For now, I think I'm OK...I will take a rest day tomorrow, though. :)

Kelli, no celebrity sightings in a few weeks. Just trying to ramp up my weekly mileage..it's tough when the overnight low is 82, and the daytime high here has been over 100 for the past 31 days..and counting...I will never sign up for a Fall marathon again..mark my words!! :)

But we would miss you in St George!!!

Honestly, I agree and our weather is nowhere near as hot as yours. I prefer to train hard in the late winter/early spring!

Run w/ Darin before work. I felt a bit sluggish, even though yesterday was a rest day. The continuous string of 100+ degree days is getting old..we surpassed the 2nd place record with 31 consecutive days over 100 degrees at DFW. The all-time record is 69...we probably have shot at that one. Overnight lows are around 82-85 now..yes, I'm complaining...I think this year will be my last Fall marathon, as long as I'm still living in Texas...it's just too hot for training..yes, I'm a wimp...give me 50s and 60s, and I'm happy! :)

Did you read that artical in Runners world?? About those running in heat and doing a fall marathon?? Good read for you I am sure. I thought about you and how well you perform in elevation and in the cool temps when you do come up and do them. Good read for sure.:)

From timp on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 11:55:10 from 144.188.24.25

yeah man, that heat just sucks the life out of you. It might be a good idea what you are thinking. Even getting up really early it is hard to do the tempo and long runs you need to do for a fall marathon. Maybe if you stick to a late fall one, you'd have time to build the base in summer and then hit the longer runs and tempos in the late sept-dec time frame.

From Rhett on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 15:16:03 from 74.32.220.216

I decided that last year, that I wouldn't do anymore Fall marathons. That's why I didn't sign up for SGM this year. It's just too hard to train well here in Havasu during the summer. Keep up the good work though.

Oh man, that's brutal. And I thought it was bad here. I don't blame you and Rhett for not wanting to train during the summer. I hate it, too. I guess that's why I do it on the treadmill during the summer.

Maybe you should sign up for Ogden or the Salt Lake Marathon....or even UVM again. So many choices.

Yep, Smooth..the trails are through the trees and the shade is quite nice this time of year.

I'll probably run a local trail run here in Novemeber - http://nttr.org/rumble/ , there's 15K, 30K, and 50K -- I'm not sure what I'll be in shape for. I know I can run 15K on a trail...not sure about 30 or 50. I'm not ready to run any of those big trail Ultras in the mountains...maybe next year! ;)

From Smooth on Sat, Aug 06, 2011 at 15:42:24 from 67.2.98.112

I just watch the videos on that website, very pretty trail in wooded area around the lake. Our trails here are mostly in mountains, technical up and downs.

You can definitely do the 30K. Trail running is slower but much gentler on the legs. Remembering to eat is the trick, so it helps to have a pacer for the ultra mountain trails! :)

My hosts have a friend who is training for her first marathon, and she needed to run 18 miles on Friday, so I tagged along for 16 of those miles (she lives about 1 mile from Glen and Charlotte's).

I was a little nervous, hoping I would be able to finish 16 miles, especially because I had just run 13 the day before, and we're at 5000 ft altitude.

The altitude was no problem. It was another beautiful morning with temps in the high 50s. Sweet!

Started the run with 9:00/mi pace, but after the first 7 we slowed down. Natalie was very fit, and should have no problem finishing her first marathon (she's ridden several 100-mile bike rides in the past).

With soccer season starting, Saturday mornings are out for running. I volunteered to coach 7 and 8 year old boys again this fall. With the temps being so high, I had our first practice on Saturday morning, 9AM. I guess I could have run before practice, but I needed a little extra time to set up cones and figure out what I was going to teach the boys...so I put off my long run until Sunday.

I met Darin and Dave at Lake Grapevine. Dave ran the first 8 with us, then left. Darin and I ran together for another 3 miles out -- then I kept going (so he finished with about 14 miles). When I finished 16, I went a different direction on the trail. At 17.5, the sun was really starting to bake me, so I went for a little dip in the lake. Very refreshing! As my feet were now wet and sandy, I decided to finish the last 2.5 miles barefoot -- which wasn't too bad on the concrete sidewalks, but some of the roads were quite uncomfortable.

I finished the 20 in about 3.5 hours -- my average pace while moving (not swimming or resting) was about 9:00/mi. 26.2 is going to be tough...but after today's 20 miler, I have a little more confidence that I can finish it upright! :-)

The temps were in the mid 60's and it felt great!

Woke up the family early and got to the race in downtown Ft Worth early. The boys (7 and 8) ran the Kid's K at 7:15 -- I ran it with my youngest, and he was grinning from ear to ear as he passed people in the final stretch. This run give trophies to all the kids -- they are recycled trophies donated from Ft Worth Runners Club members. It's a cool practice...the boys really love their trophies!

My race started at 7:30. Darin, John, Dave and I discussed strategy a little before the race. Dave is still recovering from an injury, so was planning "easy 8s". Darin and I felt pretty good -- our PRs for 15K are right around 7:05 pace. We weren't sure what the day would bring, so we were aiming for 7:15ish pace...that is until the gun went off!

During the first mile or weaving and jockying, my Garmin showed 7:13/mi..it felt comfortable. We sped up a little and crossed the first mile marker in about 6:56. I still though it felt very "doable" to maintain. So, I settled in to a comfortable pace.

The course is very flat and hugs the Trinity River. The wind was steady at about 15MPH out of the north, but it only seemed to be directly in our faces for a little bit mid-way through the race.

After the turnaround at about mile 5.5, the wind was at my back, and it still felt good, so I started passing a few people. I picked up the pace a bit, and had a strong finish.

I ended up with a 1:04:14 -- my previous PR was 1:05:38 (back in January). This is a 6:56 pace -- my first sub 7:00/mi race in anything greater than 10K!! Woohoo.

Placed 5th in my AG.

I'm happy with the result and feel good going into the last few weeks leading the SGM.

What are your rest days each week?

From MarcE on Mon, Sep 12, 2011 at 08:44:59 from 204.16.82.120

My rest days vary. I took Friday and Saturday off last week, which made for a strong 20-miler on Sunday. I've been trying not to rest more than 1 day in a row, but it doesn't always work out that way. Beth is in OK helping out with her mom (who had hip replacement surgery), so I need to take care of the boys and fit in my runs when I can. :)

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

As much as I don't like to run on Sundays, I had little choice. We had our first soccer game of the season Saturday morning at 8:00AM -- just no time to get in a 20 miler before the temps got to 80 or 90, so I opted for Sunday morning.

Ran with Darin and Dave. Picked up a new pair of Saucony's last night at Academy Sports. $39..not bad. And they felt great on the 20 miler. I'll put them away now and save them for St George.

The cool temps felt great!

are you doing a three or two week taper for SGM????

From MarcE on Wed, Sep 14, 2011 at 00:07:40 from 204.16.82.120

I haven't made a plan, yet. If possible, I'd like to get a 22 miler in this weekend...20 wasn't bad, but another 6.2 has me worried. I don't want a repeat of Cowtown! Where I had to walk quite bit in the last few miles...we'll see what the weekend brings, then I'll react. I've got more miles in this cycle than I have had in quite a while, so I'm fairly confident I will finish..and should be better than the last time (I had calf issues, if you recall). Sounds like TOU will give you a two week taper...maybe I'll do 26.2 this weekend, just to see if I still can.:)

Thanks guys. The doctor Darin went to is a runner..and a very fast one at that. He said that he himself has DJD, as well and has it worse than Darin. The doctor hasn't cut back his running much..and kicked my butt by a few minutes at the 15K we ran on Labor Day. He suggested that Darin cut back on the distance and speed - if it weren't for the pain he's experiencing, I think Darin would keep on truckin' at his current speed and distance. We signed up for the Houston full marathon -- Darin's still contemplating what to do.

St George Marathon  Oct 1, 2011

Pre-Race

Flew to Vegas Friday morning. Ronnie and his wife, Candi, were kind enough to let me hitch a ride with them to St George. Got to expo around noon. Met up with Tom Slick at the expo. Also ran into Mark (Fly on the wall) at the expo and went with him to lunch at Taste of Asia (had sweet and sour shrimp w/ rice).

Went to the Pasta dinner at the convention center around 4:30. Ran in to Runnin’ Ute (Brad) and Pron8r (Don) at the dinner. Chatted for a bit, went to the expo, again – walked around a little and bought nothing (I think that’s a first).

Was in bed by 7:30pm. Watched some TV and dozed on and off until getting up around 3:00AM. Showered, dressed, grabbed my cinnamon pop-tarts, went searching for a cup of coffee (but none was to be found). Ronnie picked us up at 3:30, and we drove the 3 blocks to the buses. Got in line for the first 4:00AM bus. The temperature was 80 degrees in St George at 4:00AM.

Riding to the starting line, it definitely go cooler. By the time we reached the top, I needed to put on my sweats. I’m guessing it was about 50F at the starting line.

Hung out at the fires for a few hours. Mingled with some old friends (most I had met 4 years ago when I ran my

first St
George Marathon).

People I saw at the fires: Tom Slick (aka Lloyd Hansen), Ronnie Dunn,  Kimmy and Kathie, Mark (fly), MarkO (Huans32), Jeff (RdRunner) and Meg, Runnin’ Ute, Lark, Hawkeye, Brent (Bdz), Julie Ann (BeMo),,,and I’m sure a few others I’m forgetting.

The Running

I had no definite plan for today. My stretch goal was to run a PR (3:19:47), but I knew I hadn’t put in the mileage to make it a certainty. My happy goal was to BQ for 2013 (3:25). My satisfied goal was to finish upright.

Around 6:45 the crowd started shuffling forward and soon we were walking, then jogging, then running…into the cool darkness.

I wanted to run the first 3 miles easy, then try to maintain a 7:30ish pace for the rest of the race. As is always the case for me – I didn’t pay much attention to my watch..and just went with what seemed like a fairly easy, maintainable pace. Kind of fast down the hills, and slower up the hills.

I looked to my right and saw a familiar runner – Teena. I waved to her, wished her luck and was off (I think she was battling a cold or something…she sounded a bit horse.) That’s the last I saw of Teena (similar to what happened at Boston in 2010 when I saw her running down the middle of the road near Hopkinton).

Around mile 5 I came up behind Ronnie. At that time my average pace was about 7:14 (according to my Garmin). Ronnie said his was about 7:24 (he crossed the start line about a minute before I did). I knew that even though we run similar paces overall, we attack the ups and downs differently. So, I ran on by myself – as it was a downhill section – and I always take advantage of the gravity aid when it’s available.

I walked through every aid station (every other mile) and made sure to drink 2 cups of Gatorade or water at each. This worked out well. I kept passing the same people over and over throughout the race. I  saw Ronnie a few more times throughout the race, and walked with him for a few steps as we crested the hill at mile 19.

At the 20 mile mark I still felt surprisingly good. I was still on track for a PR. Calves were a bit tight, but no cramping.

With 4 to go, I didn’t feel quite as good, but I was still OK.

With 3 to go, I started that sinking feeling. The urge to walk was getting too great…and I gave in to the temptation. I walked a little every ½ mile. With about 2 to go, the walks become more frequent. My PR chances were blown with 2 miles to go…but, I could still BQ, if I didn’t fall apart completely.

As I rounded the last corner, I took one more short walk break, then made my way down to the finish line. I heard my name called as I go close, raised my arms as best as I could, in case anyone was watching on the live feed, and crossed the line with a 3:21:43. I qualified for the 2013 Boston Marathon by 3:17 (I hope that’s enough to get me in, if I decide to sign up…it’s such a long ways off.)

Post-Race

I limped around Worthen Park for a while, looking for familiar faces. I saw Brent, Mark M, Mark O, Susanna (I’m sorry we didn’t get to visit long, and I missed seeing Larry this trip), Lloyd, Lark, Brad, Bradley,  and Hawkeye.  I ate an ice cream, drank a coke, and a couple bottles of water. Sat on the grass, and had a tough time getting back up. J

Later on, after showering, I walked back to the park in time to see Lloyd collect his award for winning his age division in the Grand Slam (Congrats, Buddy! – you have had quite a year of running. 60 isn’t slowing you down)

After an early dinner at Chili’s with Ronnie and his wife, we drove back to Vegas. Spent a low-key night at the Stratosphere (avoided “The Strip”), and flew back to Dallas on Sunday morning.

It was an excellent weekend!

Lessons learned:

  • St George is brutal on the muscles. Maybe not during the race, but in the days following – especially if you try to run fast, and don’t have quite the mileage base needed. Make downhill running part of the training plan.
  • Flying to Vegas then driving to St George is a good way to go. Even better would be to fly to St George.
  • Don’t get on the early bus to win a prize – it won’t happen! J Get on the early bus to mingle with friends..and contemplate the 26.2 miles ahead.

From MarcE on Tue, Oct 04, 2011 at 11:28:42 from 204.16.82.120

Tim - I give myself an A- on this one. Had I gotten in more miles of training, I have no doubt I could have PRed. Two 20-milers and a peak weak of 40 miles just isn't quite enough training...it's not easy training in the hot Summer for an early Fall marathon. You could really rock this marathon if you ran it..PR for sure for you.

Hey Marc buddy!!! You did AWESOME!!! CONGRATS on the nearly PR (it sure was tough training thru the hot hot TX summer with record heat this year) and the BQ. You never cease to amaze me!

So bummed that I didn't get to visit with you. After I saw you briefly, I had to tend to Karen and help her find her family. I was super bummed that I missed you at the Expo. I stayed with Teena till 5:15 and got to the pasta table where Running Utes, BeMo, the Blacks and Waits were; but never walked around the expo this year.

I can't remember, are you running Boston 2012? Please tell me you are! :)

Again, GREAT race and performance as always! I love reading your report.

Smooth - Thanks! For some reason Slick, Ronnie, and I thought the meet and greet was at 4:30 at the Expo pasta thing. Nobody was there. We must have walked out as you were walking in. Nope, I didn't get in to Boston this year. I only ran 2 marathons last year, and wasn't BQed. But, I'm set for 2013 -- I'm not sure if I'll run it for sure, but it's nice to know I can sign up. My next marathon I'm signed up for is Houston, but leaving my options open for a couple between now and then - depending on how my recovery, ramp up goes.

It's time to get back on the horse. After a weekend of rain (it's been about 5 months since we've had any good rain around here), catching up on work around the house, and watching soccer -- I decided to give the old legs a try.

I ran 1 mile for every pound I've gained since SGM! I didn't look at my watch until I hit the 2 mile turnaround when I was at a 7:15 pace. It really didn't seem that fast. I know I was breathing hard, but I thought that was mainly due to my loss of fitness. I ran the last 2 miles back to the barn faster. It felt good to stretch the legs!

Well, maybe getting back on the horse might be delayed a little. My right calf was feeling a little tight after Monday's all too fast 4 miler..and when I went for an easy run today, almost from the start I could feel it starting to hurt. After my first mile, I walked back in. From my own self-diagnosis, I think I have a mild calf strain. Nothing that 2 weeks off of running shouldn't cure. I'm pretty sure this is what I went through before SGM 2009. Going to take it easy for a couple weeks, then ease back into it.

From MarcE on Tue, Nov 22, 2011 at 13:49:43 from 76.16.134.24

Slick - I think my leg has something a little more serious than tight muscles. After taking off 5 days to give it a lot of rest, I ran 7.5 miles on Sunday. After about 2 miles it started hurting. I kept with it - changing my stride to try to make the pain go away. I massaged it after the run, did lots of stretching. Today (2 days later), it is puffy. I have some swelling that you can indent with your fingers -- and it holds its shape. I'm on vacation visiting relatives--but, when I return home, I'll probably make an appointment to see a sports doctor. This happened a few years ago after St George 2009, as well. I think I had to take a few months off of running for it to heal completely. White Rock is a big question mark at this point..but I'll still go, and take lots of pictures!

No time to be limping around. Give that leg a week off on a really easy taper and see how it feels. Theres really no training to be had in the last week of taper anyway, except for some stretching.

I guess I will be seeing you in about a week for the White Rock! I can't wait to kick my butt in the Lone Star State again this year.

I'm not going to write up a race report for this one. Since SGM, I've run very little, and have been have some nagging calf/shin issues. So, I've been taking it easy for a couple weeks, just hoping to be able to finish this half marathon without walking the whole thing.

Tom Slick came from Utah to run the full White Rock Marathon. As it hadn't rained all year, who would guess that we'd get rain in December? Well, it rained...for the entire 13.1 miles!! It was about 42 degrees, and I felt ... soggy. I wore a freebie poncho for 13 of the 13.1 mile--only removing it for the finish photo.

I was hoping to break 2 hours, and I actually finished in about 1:49 (I haven't even checked the official results, as it was a training run). I walked a few times, but overall am glad that I finished it.

Tom Slick did great -- and it was fun having him around to add his unique flavor to the event!

Next up is Houston Marathon on January 15th, then Cowtown pacing in Feb. I need to start ramping up.

Oh, the legs feel a little tight, but nowhere near as bad as when I ran 7 miles at Thanksgiving. time to ramp up the miles!

Thanks, all for the kind remarks.

I seem to have lost a little of my "gojo", again. I'm not sure why, but I've lost some of that spring in my step that I used to feel when I laced up the running shoes. I think I got it again for a little while last year, when I started running shorter, faster races. I may take a little break from the long runs after I get through Houston (Jan) and Cowtown (Feb), and run for fun...and not so long, for a little while. :)
