Rode to Austin on Saturday with friends, Jon and Cindy, and Doug. Dinner Saturday night at Macaroni Grill, with a group of 16. As this was "only a half", I'm not so stringent with my prerace routine -- but if this was a full, I probalby would have skipped the 2 hour dinner and opted for something quick and simple.

Back to the room, got my bib pinned to my singlet, D-tag(disposable chip) on my shoe, and was in bed by 10:00pm.

Up at 5:45 for a 6:45 am start time. The hotel was stayed at was about a 1/4 mile from the starting line..it was great. Except, the morning proved to be pretty windy..a little too windy for some of the barricades they had lining the course, so the they had to delay the start by nearly 1 hour. I regret not bringing my sunglasses -- with the original 6:45 start time, I didn't think I'd need them (sunrise is at 7:30).

I lined up with Jon -- a friend of mine in my age group, who I ran with a few times at some other events, and know through training at a local running store. We were planning to go out at about a 7:40 pace and see how it felt from there. This didn't last too long. I was feeling pretty good, so I ran a nice comfortable pace throughout --unfortunately, Jon's comfortable pace was a little slower than mine.

It was a windy morning, but luck would have it that in the point to point race that mainly goes northwest to southeast, the wind was from the NW. :) There were a few places where we turned into the wind, but not very many. The couse had some nice downhill sections, and a few uphills.

The race finished through the UT campus and the last mile was a nice gradual downhill.

I finished in 1:34:26, a 1:06 PR!!!!! (My previous PR was in April 2007). Yes, maybe this was a little wind/hill aided, but I'm a little older, and it's still a PR!

Besides the delay in the start, I think this event was very good -- and I'll probably be back next year!

Nice job, Marc! I like the look of those splits.

NICE RACE! A PR is a PR no matter what, the wind could have been against and I am sure you would have still done AWESOME. I would struggle with a delayed start time like that, it would mess with my head.

Great race Marc. Sounds like it was 1/2 marathon weekend for all of us, a perfect prep for Boston. Congrats on the PR. That is fantastic!

Marc!!! Didn't even know you had a Half planned this weekend. How did I miss that? WOW!!! SO VERY PROUD of you and SO VERY VERY HAPPY for your PR! I have to chuckle on the "I'm little older!" How about "I'm wiser and faster!" eh? You ARE AWESOME!!! Wish I was there to give you a HIGH 5!!!

After reading your race report and reading Benny's I'm reminded of the Princess Bride when Inigo says, "Do you think he's using the same wind we are?"

Very nice job on the PR. Looks like your back in shape. And no mention of your pesky calves. Glad we didn't compete on that race. You would of killed me.:)

Maynard -- I surprised myself!

Kelli -- After we were standing there in the breeze for about 30 minutes, they announced that it would be another 15 minutes..so I jumped out of the starting area, hit the PoP one last time and got back before the start. I think that made the difference!

Rhett - Thanks! I still can't get over your comeback..I might just have to tear my PF, too!

Smooth - I was so busy last week, I barely mentioned it. There's a full marathon in Austin in Feb..another chance for you to sneak in a long training run before Boston!

Andy - Thanks, it was probably one of my smartest races ever. I really enjoy the half marathon distance. It's just long enough!

Tim - Thanks, man!

Burt - I watched Princess Bride for the first time this Christmas. I'll have to watch it again. I guess it was windy everywhere on Saturday.

RP - thanks, Paul.

MarkO - Thanks. I took a chance and wore the Asic Speedstars I bought in Boston 2008 -- they worked great. Calves feel a little tight today, but not too bad. I think the lighter shoes made a lot of difference in my time. Dangit, I should have bet you!!!!! :)

Nice run!!!! Cowtown and then Boston!

From MarcE on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 08:08:35 from 206.225.68.37

Teena -- No, YOU ARE AWESOME! :) If you were running this race, you would probably have finished in 1:30!

Kathie - Thanks! Actually, there's a few more races on the schedule. Including perhaps my own Goofy challenge this weekend (I signed up for a Half Marathon this Saturday (Lake Benbrook) -- and my buddy, Ty wants to run the Waco Marathon on Sunday -- both will be long training runs. I ran Waco in Oct 2007 in 3:30...will see if I can match that one (if so, BQ for 2011!)
