What was I thinking? Having just finished reading Born to Run -- a great book that talks about what damage has been done to runners over the past 30 years since the advent of running shoes, and because I had to run inside today on the treadmill, I decided to run in just my socks (it's a public treadmill, didn't want to oog people out).

The run felt great for the first mile or so -- I felt so liberated, free of shoes...I ramped the speed from 6 to 7.5 mph....feeling good. Around mile 2, I could feel a little blistering in the center of the pad of my foot. By mile 3, I called it quits. I stepped of the treadmill, and my feet were burning up -- I didn't realize how much friction I must have been generating.. Anyways, I probably should have started slower or less distance and worked my way up. 3 hours later, my feet still feel a little sore.

BTW - I was going to run 6, but only managed .5 more miles with my shoes on -- they felt like lead weights on my feet!

I'll probably give it another try in a few days, once the blisters have subsided.

Seriously thinking about trying the Vibram 5-fingers..

Thanks for the review of barefoot running. I have thought about wearing just socks on TM...but then I need to get black socks. I think the VFFs is a better choice! Can't wait to hear how you like it.

ICE your feet. Then bandaid over the blister if there's one.

I was surprised the first time I ran without shoes. It really is hard on your feet. But I think it will make your feet stronger in the long run. I have worked up to three miles but I have not done it is a few week maybe I will give it a go again tonight.

Ouch! My husband, aaronkennard.fastrunningblog.com is a barefoot/five finger runner ever since we listened to Born to Run a few months ago. He did the same thing as you, running 5 miles barefoot the first day before he realized he should build into it very gradually. Read http://runningbarefoot.org/?page_id=455#lose-the-shoes for advice on how to transition. Good luck!
