OK...maybe I'm not a complete wuss. I managed to get in my 50 mile week afterall!!!! Woohooo..yay me!

Today was probably the best run I've had all year. The temp when I started was 46 degrees, slight wind (8-10mph), overcast skies. If there's weather I could hope for at Boston, it would be like today's (maybe with a nice 20 MPH tailwind, but I won't get greedy :-)

Today I ran on the Mineral Wells State Railway Trailway (or whatever it's called). I love running on hard-packed gravel..especially a day after a good rain (no dust). Being that this trail used to be railroad tracks, it drains great. No puddles to dodge! The trail has a mile marker ever..er..mile. I park at the trailhead and run out half as far as I want to run for the day. When I reached the 11 mile mark, I still felt great, so I went to 12 and turned around. I knew I would get in 24 miles, one way or another. I was on a 8:09 pace at the turnaround (more downhill on the way out).

I was trying to run by effort today. I planned to keep my HR between 130-140 for the first 20, then let it go from 140-150 for miles 21-22, then 150-160 for the final 2 miles. I stuck to it very well. This meant slowing down a little on the uphills, and speeding up a little down hills. I think I might give this "effort" thing a shot at Boston -- though I usually run "by feel" anyways.

I kept thinking about what Kathie said about my last run of 3.85 -- and how she would have put in an extra .15 miles just to make it 4. Well, I felt so good when I got to the parking lot that I ran around it in an attempt to make up those .15 miles...when I hit the "stop" button on the Garmin it was 24.16 -- I was over by .01 miles. Doh!! What is Kathie going to think of that?!

Avg Pace: 8:20

Avg HR: 139

I really need to order another pair of Asic Speedstars and wear them in a little before Boston.

Wow Marc, awesome job. Hey, you almost ran another marathon. It's funny you should mention what Kathie said, because if I had run 24 miles, I probably would have gone another 2 to make it a marathon. Just kidding.

Marc, you're an animal. I can't believe you went 24+ miles just to get in your 50 for the week . Now what is your plan for next week. Are you going to recover a bit or are you just going forward with training as ususal?

From Teena on Sat, Mar 14, 2009 at 23:13:03 from 67.177.20.13

Marc -- you are such a stud!

24.16 miles at an 8:20 pace. That's AWESOME!!!

From Kathie on Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 00:01:28 from 207.155.176.10

Oh Marc you make me laugh so hard! I am glad I pushed that extra .16 out of you. If you do well at Boston It is because of that .16 and I want credit!

From Marce on Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 13:59:33 from 206.225.68.10

Dale, I thought about jogging back out to the 1 mile marker, and back just to call it 26.2, but decided that there was no finisher's medal waiting for me, so why bother? :-)

Rhett, yep needed to get that 50+ mile week in to boost my confidence going into Boston. It was probably good that I had a rest day on Friday, making it a great run on Saturday. I'll probably rest on Sunday (today), and try to ramp up the miles in the 40-50 range again this week.

Thanks, Teena! I wouldn't call me a stud...I'm still somewhere between wuss and stud. :-) Thanks for lurking out there!

Alright, Kathie, I'll give you partial credit for the extra .16 miles, which I'm sure will immensely improve my chances of meeting my goal in Boston...whatever that turns out to be on race day! :-)

Good point, Marc.

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 22:44:12 from 71.36.65.79

24.16??!!! on a rail trail??? I always run slower on trail for some reason. Did it remind you of the trail at Park City? Man, that's serious mileage. Two more weeks of training hard; then taper, hallelujah!

From MissFIT on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 14:27:26 from 163.248.142.122

You a wuss?! Hardly, great run :)

From Marce on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 23:29:11 from 206.225.68.10

Hey Smooth, the trail I run on didn't remind me of Park City much. They are both long, straight and boring, but Park City has some nice mountains to look at. My trail has some trees surrounding it (nice in the summer to have a little shade) and the gravel is much finer than PC--it's nearly an ideal running surface. No rocks bigger than 1/4 inch. Yep, a couple more weeks and it's taper time!

Thanks, MissFIT -- when are you going to post a picture?..it doesn't have to be of you, maybe a pet, or one of your BF (maybe even one he doesn't want the whole world to see! :O )
