This was my second time running this race. Not sure why I ran it, really. I fell for the "sign up early or pay more later" trap. I spent the bucks so I was comited. I went into this midnight event as a "long training run with benefits". I secretly wanted to beat last year's time, but I knew that was a long shot, as I haven't been training a whole lot lately.

This race is run completely in a park in Ft Worth, and starts at midnight. There is a 25K flavor (La Scorchita) and the 50K both running the same 5K loop. There were about 400 runners in both events. Nice 10MPH breeze, temps started in the low 80s, and by the time I finished were in the upper 70s.
Like last year, I got to Trinity Park (in Ft Worth) about 2 hours early. Set up my aid station right along side the trail. Met up with a few friends, and sat around awaiting the stroke of midnight.

I was going to try to run as even splits as possible. I was also planning to walk through each of the aid stations, every 1.5 miles.

The 5K laps slowly ticked away.I kept talking to myself along the way.
1 down ("10% complete").....2 down ("only 8 to go")....3 down ("almost 10 miles...only 20 miles to go...uggg..why am I doing this?"). 4 down ("40%...1 more lap an you're halfway")...5 down ("half way...15.5 miles..that's the longest you've run since..should I quit now and call it a 25K training run?" ... 6 down ("only 4 to go...that's 12.4 miles remaining...that's longer than you've run since Steamboat in June"...

On the 7th lap, I ran about 1.5 miles with a guy from Houston. I thought he looked much faster than me, and was surprised to find out he was on the same lap. That 1.5 miles just flew by as we talked about our other races. I assured him that I wasn't going to try to race him for a spot, but just "wanted to finish". As we crossed the line with 2 laps to go, he must have stopped a while at the aid station, because I lost him, and wasn't about to wait up for him. He ended up finishing a few minutes behind me, but I credit him for lighting a fire under me to get my rear in gear!

The last 2 laps flew by..and my times improved. As I crossed the finish line at 4:43AM, I was surprised to find out that I placed in the top 10 -- which earned me a pretty cool shoe bag/back pack thingy (though it only has a single strap)..anyways it's the closest thing to hardware that I've earned this year.

I broke a few cardinal rule of running (and I didn't pay the price):

I wore a brand new pair of shoes (and socks). (but my feet felt great the whole way)
I ate/drank stuff I didn't train with. They had Heed gels and drink. Not great, but didn't make me hurl.

Overall place: 12th out of 119 (I placed 11th out of 90ish last year)
I was 9th male overall.

Overall, I was pretty happy with this event. Organization was excellent. The course was pretty well lighted this year, and it was fun to see so many other crazies out there after midnight doing what they love!

Marc,

You are amazing!!! I remember reading your report last year for this race and thinking you were nuts ... now you go and do it again!!! :) I should go look up your last year's report just to compare notes ... but it seems like this year was much easier for you. Go figure!!! (You're so tough.)

Congrats on another year of insane toughness and placing so high!!! Hope you enjoy your bag for years to come! :)

Seriously ... congrats!!! :) :) :) :) :) ...

nice job man! 4:43 50K is awesome -- very nice job!

what was the winner time -- ?4:40? 4:10?

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 20:44:50 from 71.36.67.53

Marc, what a CRAZY-FUN-INSANE race! I think it's so COOL that you did it again this year and placed higher. You have MAJOR MENTAL TOUGHNESS!!! Last year you were very serious about this race, setting up your own aid station and plan. This year you seemed to just "wing it"! WAY TO GO!!! Those cardinal rules are made to be broken.

From MarcE on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 21:53:51 from 24.155.140.8

Teena - last year I took this race a little more serious. I finished it about 7 minutes faster. This year with all my issue with my goofy blood pressure, etc.. I decide that a finish, no matter what time, was the goal. I took it fairly easy, and hopefully recovery will be fairly quick. Thanks!

Tim - 4:43 is OK. I know on the right conditions I should be able to finish in the 8:00/mi pace (instead of 9:00+). The winning time was 3:08 (smokin fast), while the 2nd place was like 3:46 -- the winner actually lapped the 2nd place runner twice..I was just starting my 6th lap when he was starting his 10th. That guy was fast.

Smooth - Thanks! I tried to have fun with it...if it's not fun, why do it? :-) I'll probably find myself signing up for it again next year.

Ok Marc you must really be crazy to run this kind of race "without training a whole lot" you must be a natural!

From ChrisM on Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 04:34:13 from 130.88.123.4

Wow that's impressive, good job! Running a 50k by doing 5k laps must be really tiring mentally (as well as physically...)

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 10:20:57 from 168.179.215.242

Wild man. Wild!

You're still leading the mileage board.

From DonGardinero on Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 13:51:34 from 75.162.181.199

That sure sounds like a fun race. How are you feeling today?

From MarcE on Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 20:17:01 from 129.188.33.25

Kathie - yes, I must be crazy.

ChrisM - it is boring, but it makes it into 10 managable chunks. It wasn't too boring because you always saw different people. There were lots of walkers and slower runners that I saw several times each. It is a different experience than a "normal" race.

Fly - I doubt I'll lead the mileage board for more than a day or two. I don't plan to run too much more this week. Got all my miles in on Sunday. :-)

Dale - I feel pretty good. Feeling it mostly in my hip flexors, but other than very minor pain, I'm walking normal and feeling good. Thanks for asking!

From Huans32 on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 08:40:09 from 138.64.2.76

WOW!!! You did awesome yet again. And to think that your longest run since your last marathon was only 15.5. LOL your an animal.

From MrsFIT on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 18:21:21 from 24.2.68.35

So MarcE, is running an ultra easier or harder than running a marathon(for a PR)?

From MarcE on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 00:47:09 from 24.155.140.8

Mark - Thanks, man! I hope to be in shapre to run with you at SGM in 70+ days.

Kristi - that's an interesting question. Running an easy 31 miles is actually much easier than trying to PR at 26.2 miles. Pace is so important from the start when you're going for a peak marathon performance. If you go out too fast you will crash and burn. Too slow, and you won't be able to make up the time. An easy 31 miler is all about fueling and hydrating -- if you take it easy, and take in enough calories and fluids to replace what you are using up, you can go for a long, long time. (Does that kind of answer your question?)

From MrsFIT on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 06:36:54 from 24.2.68.35

YES! I suppose completing an ultra, a marathon or a triathlon are "three different monsters." Basically it comes down to how much you are willing to suffer - I LOVE IT!

From Teena on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 23:52:29 from 67.177.20.13

Maybe someone already asked this, but ... who's in the new pic???

From MarcE on Thu, Jul 23, 2009 at 00:09:15 from 129.188.33.25

Teena - That's Carolyn and Julie. They're serious runners, and are actually coaches for a local running store. I started running with them while training for Chicago in 2006. They were out and about in Ft Worth and decided to stop by the park on Saturday night and wish me luck. It was quite the surprise to see them, so I snapped a picture. I put it there, hoping it would spice up my blog a little. :-)
