Drove up to the Grasslands with Ty (my Whiterock buddy) and John (iroman) -- the location of a 50 mile race that I'm being coaxed into running in March -- for a little trail training. There is NO WAY I could run 50 miles on that!!!!! Imagine running on a beach -- covered with cowtracks. Sandy and bumpy -- not many rocks or roots, but I have blisters where I've never had blisters before! Lots of lateral movement (blisters on the sides of my big toes). We managed to get a little lost -- even though the trails are very well-marked. We thought we were doing a 10 mile loop, and somehow ended up doing 13. We lost John -- he was bonking badly. He walked out of the wilderness about a half hour behind us...and then Ty locked his keys in his trunk. His wife had to drive about an hour to get him a different key. Let's just say my first trail run will be remembered for a long time!

I need to ask Santa for a late request -- Trail shoes!!!

For the most part, while we were running we were doing miles in the 9:30-10:00 range -- and it felt like we were going faster. We ran about 13 miles -- which felt closer to 20!

I have a new respect for trail runners! (Give me a week or two to rethink this 50 miler...maybe I'll find one that's on something a little more firm than sand)

WOW! What an adventurous day on the trail. I have a hunch that you're gonna do it! Trail shoes would definitely help. Now you know how it feels to run on dry snow. It's like running on cornstarch or sand, really slow you down. I'm interested to find out how you like running that 50 miler in March. How many weeks out from Boston is it?

From MarcE on Tue, Dec 22, 2009 at 22:48:30 from 206.225.68.25

Boston? Oh, yeah..I signed up for that one. ;) I know we're about 4 months out. I'm about 2 months out from pacing Cowtown and still haven't come up with a running plan. I'll probably do the usual 4 days a week with a long run on the weekend. Work has been so crazy lately, I'm finding it hard to get in a some of my runs!

I love running on trails! The trail you've described sounds ugly though.

My trail shoe recommendations: Saucony Guide TR, Asics GT-2150 trail, or the Montrail Hardrock.

Wow sounds like a brutal day...I hope you get your Christmas trail shoes...running gear the best gift ever!

From MarcE on Wed, Dec 23, 2009 at 16:15:11 from 206.225.68.25

Thanks for the recommendations Maynard -- do any of these shoes does a better job of keeping out sand than others? My socks were covered in sand when I finished--no wonder I had blisters. I'll probably go to a running store for my first trail shoes..and get fitted right.

I agree, Kathie!

From Maynard on Wed, Dec 23, 2009 at 16:37:22 from 159.212.71.200

There's always going to be some amount of sand and dirt that filters through the mesh material of the shoe, but for the the other stuff, I'd recommend a pair of trail gaiters.

www.dirtygirlgaiters.com I think is the web address for some pretty nifty ones (I don't dare do a web search for dirty girl anything here at work so I can't tell you for sure if that's the correct web address...).

welcome to the trails, marc! there really isn;t anything better in running that a good single track trail. That trail doesn't sound great, though...but you may learn to love it. you never know.

I'm with Maynard and Tim on this one. Trail running is great. I don't normally make new years resolutions, but one I will be making is to do more trail runs next year. The two trail races I've done were some of the most memorable races I've done. I think Striders (Running store) might put on NUTS this year (Northern Utah Trail Series). I hope they do.

I hope you have been a good boy and get those track shoes! Have a MeRrY ChRiStMaS!!!

Merry Christmas. I'm doing a train marathon in Feb. I'm worried about how my feet will take it. Maybe I better get out and do some trail running.

From MarcE on Thu, Dec 24, 2009 at 15:49:48 from 206.225.68.25

Tim - Thanks, man. I have a new respect for you. You CAN NOT run on trails in road-running shoes. Sure, you'll finish, but..the blisters!!! I think I will learn to love it..I just wish I had more trails nearby. I especially like running through the piney woods portion...something about running through pine, over the needles, ..very cool.

Dale - "NUTS" -- what a fitting acronym!

Kelli - I have a feeling I will get the shoes...but probably at an after-Christmas sale! :)

Rhett - I'd strongly advise you to at least run 10 miles on the trails you'll be racing on..and see what you're up against. It's a whole 'nother animal!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, Y'ALL!!!

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Where are you?

From MarcE on Thu, Dec 31, 2009 at 11:38:49 from 206.225.68.14

Teena/Smooth -- we did have a wonderful Christmas. I've been so busy with the kids off of school. I Christian (5) bowling yesterday--is that considered cross training? Took Ethan (6) to the museum and watched the first 10 minutes of "A Christmas Carrol" on Ominmax (took scary for my little guy) Been running a few times -- but basically, taking it kind of easy and enjoying some much-needed time off of work. Going for a 14 miler in about an hour with my buddy Ty.

I trust you all had a wonderful Christmas, too.

From Teena on Thu, Dec 31, 2009 at 11:57:14 from 174.52.45.85

Sounds like the best cross-training ever!!!

Wishing you and your family a very very very Happy New Year!!! Make 2010 unforgettable!!!
