Hey -- I'm thinking of taking a few miles nice and easy tomorrow. I think my body needed a little break, but I'm missing my running, too. I've managed not to gain any weight, so far. The pain is mostly gone in the right shin..but it still seems to get a little puffy throughout the day (where I push my finger into it and it stays indented). It sounds like a bad case of shin splints from what I can find on the internet.

I signed up for the Dallas White Rock Half Marathon (December 13th). I hope to run with a friend who is running his first half marathon..I'm thinking 9:30-10:30/mile. Nice and easy!

Hope that shin edema goes away. You don't have any puffiness in the feet or ankle,do you?

Glad to hear no weight gain.

GOOD LUCK on the Dallas White Rock. Running with a friend nice and easy is SO FUN and you'll be a great pacer and motivator for him!

That'll be a piece of cake for you...unless your foot hurts. You're lucky you haven't gained any weight. I think I've gained about 8 lbs since St. George, but 5 of that was right after the marathon and it never went down. What's up with that?

From MarcE on Tue, Oct 27, 2009 at 09:59:07 from 129.188.33.27

Smooth - there was some swelling in my ankle and foot (for the first couple days after the marathon), but that seems to have gone away. It's localized to the shin now...anything I should worry about?

From Smooth on Tue, Oct 27, 2009 at 10:51:08 from 174.23.240.142

Marc ~ Not to alarm you. Edema to the lower extremities have a vascular origin especially if they are accompanied by weight gain and high blood pressure and it's unilateral (meaning only one side), or localized pain. Puffiness to ankles, feet and lower legs after racing a marathon is fairly normal when it's bilateral. It's just the body's natural reaction to the "trauma". It should disappear within a week.

It sounds like your puffiness comes on later in the day so I think elevating the leg should help. I will only be concerned if the puffiness persists and the swelling area is red or warm to touch. I'm not a doctor, just a worry-wart.
