Ran 3.9 miles with Jo at lunch. She hasn't run in about a week, so she wanted to take it easy. We ran between 8:00-9:00 pace. Felt really easy--barely broke a sweat. I think I'll run again with the speedsters after work.

It's a little tough being between races right now. My next scheduled race is a 50K in July -- I ran it in about 8:50/mi pace last year. I might give it a little harder effort this year. We'll see how hot and humid the next 2 months are...and if I get any good, quality long runs in...or if they're all going to be "survival" runs in the heat of Texas!

I find out in a week if I made the 2009 St George Marathon Lottery. I've got my fingers crossed!

Part Deux:
Darin and his 15-yo son, Zachary ran with me after work. Zachary is turning into quite the speedster, but has yet to beat his dad or me in a race. He runs track and cross country and has gotten quite a bit faster this year -- he's gotten his best mile down to about 5:20, but he seems to run out of gas in anything over 2 miles. He was talking a lot of trash, when we started out today's run at a "pedestrian" pace of about 7:30-7:40. He was saving himself to kick us old guys' butts in the last mile. We were planning on 5 miles -- so we toyed with him until the beginning of the 4th mile, when I decided to kick it up a notch. He stuck with me as we did a 6:36. But, then he started fading fast. His dad passed him, too. I coasted to a 6:56 last mile -- with Darin finishing about 30 seconds behind, and Zachary loped in about a minute later, with his tail between his legs. :-) (I'm going to enjoy it while we can..in no time he'll be kicking our butts)

2nd RUN: AP 7:17

I will keep my fingers crossed for you as well!!!

That is one heck of a pace for a 50k!!!

From Smooth on Mon, May 04, 2009 at 13:47:58 from 71.36.87.147

Watch it when you say: hardly break a sweat at 8-9 pace. I break more than a sweat at that pace. :) Hey, you can always fly to Utah and stay with me if you want to do some of the Utah races before your 50K in July.

Keeping my fingers and toes cross for you too on SGM '09. Have a great week.

From huans32 on Mon, May 04, 2009 at 14:33:12 from 138.64.2.76

Man I am counting on you getting into SGM this year. This year will be my year of BQing down there. And you got to be there to make it all happen. No pressure.:) Good luck man.

From Teena on Mon, May 04, 2009 at 15:17:56 from 67.177.20.13

I remember you talking about Jo! Glad you two still run together. :)

Yes ... you need to get into SGM and so do I!!! Maybe there is some type of ritual or sacrifice that will better our odds! :)

From DonGardinero on Mon, May 04, 2009 at 15:22:15 from 75.162.162.55

Hey Marc...If you ever happen to be in Utah at the end of March, You, Mark-O and I should run the Buffalo Run 50 miler. They also have a 50k and 25k option and they're all run on Antelope Island.

Good luck, I hope you're selected for SGM.

From Kelli on Mon, May 04, 2009 at 19:39:39 from 71.219.98.88

You go "old man!" I love how kids think they can beat us just because we are old. Someone has to put them in their place! WOW, you did it good and fast!!!!!

From MarcE on Mon, May 04, 2009 at 20:24:09 from 129.188.33.25

Kelli - a 50K is only a 5 mile cool-down beyond a marathon! :-) There are some fast whipper-snappers out there..I know Zachary will beat me soon. Just trying to prolong that day--and it think it makes him work harder to get schooled by the old fogeys!

Smooth - that is SOOOO kind of you to invite me to stay with you to run a marathon or two in Utah. I might just take you up on it! (I hope Larry's cool with you inviting a guy you met on the internet to stay with you :)

Huans - I've got a good feeling about getting in this year. We're going sub 3:16 in October!

Teena - I didn't realize you weren't one of those locals that runs the Series to get in. So you're sweating out the lottery, too? Don't know of any rituals to get us in, but I'm pretty sure Tom Slick my have some sort of incriminating photos of the race director (he got in 10 straight years...somehow or other :) Jo's been slacking on her running lately. She's an aerobics/spin/abs teacher at our on-site fitness center. She's in amazing shape, but if you don't run for a while, you lose the speed. She'll be back...though she's only going to run 1/2 marathons from now on...so she says!

Dale - Thanks for the offer. 50 miles..that sounds like a fun day (or two) of running for us. Is Antelope Island at a high elevation (I might have to stick to sea-level for a run of that distance..if I ever decide to give it a shot)

From DonGardinero on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 01:00:54 from 152.216.7.5

Marc...It's at Great Salt Lake level...LOL....It actually is out in the middle of the lake. Pretty cool.

From Smooth on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 13:56:50 from 71.36.82.104

Of course Larry's cool about it. You're not SOME guy I met on the internet. He loves my Boston buddies!!! We have two guest rooms so you can bring the whole family. Utah Valley Marathon is on June 20 in Provo. That's 30 miles to my house. You can still sign up. Bryce Canyon 1/2 is July 18; you may want to make a family vacation out of that one in the Bryce Canyon State Park, awesome Utah vacation destination.

From Rhett on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 14:06:18 from 170.215.58.122

Marc, is that the 50K that rou ran at night? I really should start running farther than 26.2 and then maybe, just maybe the 26.2 would seem shorter and easier.

From Kathie on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 16:31:51 from 207.155.176.10

I too hope you get into SG we will all be holding our breath until we know. Hickgirl and I are in through the series so we are breathing easy.

From Kelli on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 18:12:36 from 71.219.98.88

If people are coming to visit and run, we will of course need to have a party.

From MarcE on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 18:37:30 from 206.225.68.52

Dale - OK, so SLC is what about 4000 ft above sea-level? That's doable.

Smooth - you're making it very tempting. Not sure what you might be asking for. My children are little angels, but still... I'll definitely give it some thought (even if I DO get into St George)

Rhett - Yep, that's the one. It starts at midnight. Pretty crazy, but that's the only time you'd want to run in the middle of summer in Ft Worth, Texas! Give it a try..after your PF has healed. I can't say it will make 26.2 seem easier, though.

Kathy - that's great that you and Hickgirl are in through the Runner's Series..I could have signed up for that, but by the time I factored in travel expenses, etc..I might just as well buy a charity slot. :)

Kelli - Party for sure! At least a pre-race carboloading dinner, and post-race pig-out!

From timp on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 21:49:03 from 129.188.33.26
