My Brush With Bush

Darin texted me on Friday night to go trail running with Jo, Dave, and him at the same place we ran last week. I was to meet at his house at 6:00. I woke up at 4:40 and, as usual, weighed the pros and cons of going back to sleep with the benefits of running. And is the case usually when someone else is waiting on me, I decided to get my running clothes on and head to Darin's (about an hour away from me).

When I got to Darin's, Jo was there, but Dave had to back out due to him having to take his daughter to a soccer game or something. No biggie.

On the ride to the trailhead, Darin said that plans had changed, as the bridge to the place we ran last week was under construction, so we opted to head to the trail on the other side of the lake that he, Curstis, and I mountain biked from 2 weeks ago.

As we arrived at the parking area at the trailhead, there was a rather large guy wearing a white polo shirt and slacks blocking some of the shady parking spots (shade in Texas this time of year is a precious commodity). I was thinking, "that's kind of rude". So after we parked a little further down, I went and talked to the guy. I asked him if there was some special club ride going on -- as there were a couple top of the line Treks waiting on stands. He said, "yep, local club". And that was about that..

Just as we were about to head out on the trail for a 6 mile loop, two Suburbans pulled up. The few others at the trail head started murmuring that it was "him". It was George W Bush. Yes, the 43rd president of the United States. He was there to go for a mountain bike workout with about a dozen others (I'm sure some were security and some were local bike riders or friends of his). And Jo, Darin, and I were right there. He shook all our hands and looked genuinely excited to be our there for a workout on a hot summer morning. He said to Darin, Jo, and I, "you're the lean group" (or something like that).Within minutes, Mr. Bush's entourage passed us on their mountain bikes as we stopped running to step aside to let them pass. Mr. Bush was cruising right along at a nice clip. How cool was that!?

After a few minutes, we started our jog, just a little star struck from our brief encounter. We chatted on the run and wished we had thought to take a picture. Darn it! Nobody's going to believe us!

At about the 1.5 mile point, the single track trail crossed a park road with a port-o-let. Jo had to make a pit stop. I saw the van that had the bikes, and the big guy that I had talked to earlier. Darin and I walked over to him, and I said "I'm sorry for being a bit of a jerk back there.". He said "You weren't a jerk".  I felt the need to apologize...so I did. We chatted for a few more seconds, then got back on the trail.

The trail system we were on has about a 14 mile loop with traffic designated as "one way". At about 3 miles out we hopped on the trail heading back toward the parking lot. Jo had to get back to teach an aerobics class. After we got back to the parking lot, we took a few pictures of ourselves with Darin's smartphone and said goodbye to Jo.

Darin and I saw that the Mr Bush's SUVs were still there, so we thought maybe we might have a chance to get a photo with him if we could be there when he finished his ride. We ended up hopping on the trail, headed in the opposite direction. At about 1.5 miles out, we encountered the entourage...it seemed like they picked up a few more riders on their train. We stepped off the trail and watched them pass. Then we followed them. They put a little distance on us, but we thought that perhaps we might still only be a couple minutes behind them when they finished, and if we were lucky we might meet him again and get a picture.

Sure enough, as we finished. There he was, mingling with about a dozen people at the trail head. I asked him if he'd mind if we took a few pictures. He said "Sure, go ahead", and he even congratulated Darin and I for a great run in the heat. Believe me, the feeling was mutual. Mr Bush had just celebrated his 65th birthday a few weeks ago, and I was very impressed by his commitment to fitness, and his ability to ride those narrow, even dangerous trails. It was a very cool encounter, one I doubt I will ever forget.

Here's my picture with "W":

I feel really bad that Dave had to change his plans for a family commitment, and that Jo missed out on the photos after we finished. Maybe there with be a "next time".

That is so cool. How many people can say they ran into a former president during their run.

From Teena Marie on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 22:43:25 from 67.2.126.85

I'm guessing you boys picked up the pace big time the last 1.5 miles.

I am very happy for you!!! I love the enthusiasm that seeps through your blog!!!

Have you decided what size of photo yet?

From Smooth on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 22:46:50 from 67.2.66.250

That is way cool!!! Love how he called you guys the lean group! :)

From MarcE on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 22:47:04 from 204.16.82.120

Yup...Darin was leading, and I kept trying to push him. He told me to go on ahead...but I didn't want to look too much like a stalker, so I held back so we arrived together.

I ordered an 8x10 for my wall, a few 5x7s for my parents, and a photo mug for my mom (a real fan of both me and the ex-president).

For some reason that run on Saturday gave me a boost in enthusiasm for running -- that was much-needed lately!

From Kelli on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 22:58:20 from 71.219.99.3

OH MY!!!! What a cool experience! That guy really is quite the athlete, especially for his old age! All I was thinking at the start of your story was, "GET A PICTURE!!!!" So glad you thought of it and were able to meet up with him later. VERY COOL! He looks so "chill" the way he is standing there.

From MarcE on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 23:08:10 from 204.16.82.120

He was very "chill". I initially had my hand on his back for the picture, but thought to myself, "Self, maybe you shouldn't be touching the ex-present of the United States sweaty back." :)

From Kelli on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 23:17:54 from 71.219.99.3

Oh, I totally would have hugged him (after asking, of course). I know many are not a fan (teena), but I am! Love the guy.

From MarcE on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 23:30:02 from 204.16.82.120

Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of him (I won't bore you with my politics). But, after meeting him, and seeing him close up, early on a Saturday morning, riding a mountain bike, on a narrow single-track through the woods, at age 65, taking time to chat with the common-folk...he bumped up a few notches on my popularity scale. I'm tempted to read his book..

From Kimmy on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 00:39:57 from 75.169.113.208

way cool.....I never see anything like that on my runs!!!! Unless nearly running into a skunk counts

From DaleG on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 01:18:14 from 76.27.13.205

That is very cool, Marc.

From MarcE on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 10:30:08 from 204.16.82.120

Kimmy - skunks count! :)

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 10:38:13 from 204.113.19.47

Ahhhhhh that kind of Bush! I read the title and thought you had gotten into poison ivy or something. This kind is much less painful. Very, very cool indeed!! I think running into a president on a run would be way cooler than about anyone else, REGARDLESS of your political views. Good on all of you! I have new found respect for W as well.

From MarcE on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 10:50:31 from 204.16.82.120

OK..time to log my latest, normal, boring, runs...covering this one up for future generations to have to search hard for...thanks for reading my blog, I just had to tell someone!!!! :)

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 10:51:44 from 204.113.19.47

Marc, You could listen to his book on your runs.

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 10:52:27 from 204.113.19.47

Thanks for sharing.

From Kelli on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 12:58:49 from 71.219.99.3

I did not even get e reply out of Teena, she must be super busy!!!! I egged her on pretty good, nothing beat politics!

Why I am a fan of George Bush: he runs faster that Bill Clinton! Seriously, the guy is an athlete. His security had to ride bikes when they would go with him on runs, they could not keep up with him. I know this to be a fact.

I would be happy to see any former President (aside from one), it would make me all giddy. A President is a President. Heck, I would cartwheels for a Vice President (aside from one)!

From MarcE on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 14:01:16 from 204.16.82.120

That's funny, Kelli. I don't think I've shaken hands with any other celebrity...ever. Not even a town mayor (OK, I shook the hand of the Mayor of Waco at a marathon), but no sports figures, actors, etc.. None. I remember reading about him running 7 minute miles on his daily runs, back when I couldn't run 7 minute miles, and thought maybe it was an exaggeration. But, I'm thinking he probably did run them. When I send my photo to him for an autograph, I'll let him know if he ever needs a running buddy to just give me a call...I'll let you know how that goes. :)

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 14:57:38 from 204.113.19.47

"I would be happy to see any former President (aside from one)" Only one aside Kelli? I'd think seeing any president that served prior to Bush the father, other than Carter, would give me the willies. The rest are dead after all!

From MarcE on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 16:29:06 from 204.16.82.120

Not a Clinton supporter, eh Kelli? I thought he was popular with the ladies. :)

From Kelli on Tue, Jul 19, 2011 at 19:12:12 from 71.219.99.3

I do not mind dead presidents...but Clinton would give me the willies!!! I do not know why, that guy weirded me out from day 1 and still does!

Hmmm....have I ever met anyone famous??? I do not think so. I did get my picture taken with a former Biggest Loser contestant. Does that count? My husband met all sorts of famous people during the Olympics.

Marc, if he lets you run with him, invite me along! Maybe at the age of 65 he has slowed down a little. ;o)
