I can come up with lots of valid excuses for having my second slowest marathon (out of 20), but the truth is, I just wasn't mentally or physically prepared for today's Cowtown Marathon.

It was good having Tom Slick in town for this event -- he added quite a bit of his "Tom Slick" charm to this event...he'll probably get his picture in the Ft Worth paper with a cigar in his mouth as he crossed the finish line. He never ceases to impress me, as he is so dedicated to his training and his pre-race routine.

I didn't sleep at all last night, and felt a little feverish...but, I decided to give my 3:40 pacing a shot. The temp was 67F and 90% humidity, with S 15-20 MPH wind. I should be able to run in these "local" conditions. I was more worried for Tom Slick.

I was right on schedule up until the 18th mile, when I made an unscheduled pit stop. I handed the "3:40" sign to one of the group, and said I would catch up. I knew, I wouldn't catch up. I was just feeling aweful. I walk-ran the last 7 miles...totally dejected. I guess some days just aren't your day.

It was a little encouraging to see a few people from our pace group after the race..and they thanked me for the steady effort for the first 18 miles. One of the women, ended up speeding up for a 3:35, and the guy I handed the sign to finished at about 3:41 (I told him to keep the sign as a sourvenir for his first marathon.)

Even though I had a bad day, it was a great weekend. Hanging out with Tom Slick, seeing lots of running buddies, and adding another finisher medal to the collection (3rd of 5 to complete the "Cowtown Star").

I think my finishing time was around 3:53 -- I'm not in a hurry to look at the Garmin.

So, I'm wondering if I was really hurting bad -- or just overly lacking motivation for the past 6 miles. I don't know.

Hey Marc, sorry it didn't go well yesterday. We've all had those tough days.

From timp on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 08:35:18 from 66.167.50.219

oh and here is Slick's pic - http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/02/27/2880934/cowtown-marathon.html #18.

Don't let Marc fool you all! He really had a great day at the Cowtown. Maybe his timing was a bit off but his heart was as big as Texas and he was wearing it on his sleeve serving a huge pack runners in his pace group. And all the other runners in the area know and respect Marc for the fine man that he is, not to mention what a great runner he is!!!! Congrats on a run so well done under brutal conditions! And to think that the Texans thought this was a really good day as compared to what it has been in the past!!! 75 degrees, 90% humidity, 20 mile per hour winds over all of the course, half if it in your face, at least it was cloudy!

From DaleG on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 12:06:09 from 67.2.27.198

Hey Marc, sorry about the troubles, but at least you were able to hand off the pacing duties to someone. Other than that, it sounds like you all had a great time.

From RivertonPaul on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 18:21:03 from 67.42.27.114

Hey, we all have days like that. I'm glad you were able to finish.

From Kathie on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 21:35:08 from 174.23.137.227

I am sure you had a bug or something like that, you are such a strong runner. We all have had bad races, my goal race however is your bad race.

From MarcE on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 22:50:20 from 204.16.82.120

Tim - thanks. I had a tough day..I think next year, I'll run it for fun! The pace group gig is a whole lot of pressure that I really don't thrive on. We'll see if they even ask me back next year.

Slick - you made the weekend a heck of a lot more fun than it would have been. Thanks for hanging out with the family and enduring the boys' baskeball and soccer games. I'm sorry I almost totally sabotaged your race by forcing you to eat Uno's deepdish pizza with hot peppers at 8:00pm the night before a race..and a special thanks for the tums at 2AM! You da man!

Dale - Thanks. All in all the bad parts will fade in my memories, but the good times will stick around for a while!

RP - Thanks!

Kathie - funny you should say that. I've been coughing all day, runny nose, and chest congestion. I tried for weeks to fight off the cold or whatever my family had..it's now my turn!

Thanks all for the kind remarks.

From Tom Slick on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 23:54:38 from 69.171.160.166

It sounds like your putting this one in the past and the medal on the rod as we speak. Hey, you and the family didn't give me the gomboo, knock on wood!!!! Talk at you soon.

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Mar 01, 2011 at 12:34:30 from 204.113.19.47

The good thing about a less than ideal race is that it gives you perspective and empathy. The latter being especially useful for parents and pace group leaders.

Congratulations on toughing it out and finishing with all body parts in tact and still functioning.

How about leading a slow pace group? Something that you could do w/o thinking twice about?

From MarcE on Tue, Mar 01, 2011 at 15:25:38 from 204.16.82.120

Fly - yep, that's true. I can definitely empathize. With all the PRs I've been running this year, and more mileage than the past 2 years, I thought 3:40 was definitely doable. I'm not sure how slow would have been slow-enough. Even if I started at a 9:00/mi pace, would I have been able to maintain that? Not so sure. 10:00? 11:00? I don't know. I've got a cold or something now..I think I was just starting it as the gun went off!

From timp on Wed, Mar 02, 2011 at 09:12:57 from 144.188.24.30

So Marc - what's up next for you?

From MarcE on Wed, Mar 02, 2011 at 10:37:27 from 204.16.82.120

Tim- Good question. I'm coaching soccer, and really need to get my garden in. My buddies (Darin and Dave) are toying with the idea of running another point-to-point marathon in Oklahoma in about 2 weeks. Maybe I'll run the half?? I've got some sort of cold now, so I'm taking it easy -- and actually am going to take a sick day today and go to bed. I'll see how rationally I can plan my running this year once I've recovered and my head is clear again.

From timp on Wed, Mar 02, 2011 at 10:43:47 from 144.188.24.30

Take it easy and feel better

From Kathie on Wed, Mar 02, 2011 at 14:29:10 from 174.23.137.227

I hope you are feeling better, stay in bed you can plant you garden another day. We are months from even being close to garden planting weather.

Hey there Marc!!!

I am sorry that it did not go as planned. However, I have to say that reading Slick's comments on how you did was impressive! I am not surprised though, you truly do have a HUGE heart.

Hope you are over the bug! :)

You will forever rock!!! :) :) :)

From MarcE on Fri, Mar 04, 2011 at 00:30:40 from 204.16.82.120

Teena!! Thank you, thank you...I've been missing my dose of Teena ego booster! If I could just bottle your enthusiasm.. :)
