Cross-training continues. Though the left achilles is feeling better, I thought I'd give it a few more days of "rest", but riding my bike again. Went to the rail trail at about 7PM. Decided to ride to the end (about 18 miles away) and back. Got to the end in about 1:15 (got some dinner at McDs), then headed back. I'm greatful for the moon light, as I didn't have a light on my bike. Now I know why the trail is closed at sunset. It's not only because it is dangerous, but there are spider webs everywhere (they spin their webs across the trail--I guess they start at sunset). I finished the return trip in 1:40 for a total of 36.0 miles (I'm calling it 12 miles of running) in 2:55 (not bad on a trail bike in the dark). I won't do that ride after dark again until I get a nice headlight for my bike.

2 days until El Scorcho. Packet pickup starts today -- I'm definitely dropping from the 50K to the 25K (La Scorchita). I feel a little bad about "wimping out", but I want to be healthy for this fall's race season (including SGM).

NICE ride in the spider-web-moonlit-rail-trail! :) Smart (NOT wimpy) in switching to the La Scorchita. You don't want to re-aggravate the achilles. Have fun this weekend. Can't wait to read all about it!

Scary...I hate spider webs...ewww I am still creeped out!

Nice ride though!

Does the race start at midnight tonight (Fri)?

Are you carrying your cell phone with you?

Do you set up your own aid station like the past two years?

HAVE FUN!

From MarcE on Fri, Jul 23, 2010 at 13:55:19 from 204.16.82.120

El Scorcho starts at midnight Sunday morning. I picked up my packet yesterday, and switched to the 25K. I've got about 5 or 6 friends also running the 25K (15.5 miles). I ran the 50K the past 2 years, and it gets pretty lonely out there when the 25Kers pack up and go home. This year, I hope to finish in a little over 2 hors (around 8:00/mi), and watch my friends finish. My buddy, Ty (who I ran with a White Rock last year) is using this as a measuring stick for his BQ attempt this fall (he needs 3:30)--he plans to run around 8:00s, and I'll stick with him for as long as I can. The achilles is healing nicely--I'll be sure to warm up and stretch some before the start. I feel much better about 15.5 miles versus 31 with my amount of training so far this summer.

Smooth - I'll have my cellphone with me until the race starts -- but probably won't carry it during the race. As I'm "only" doing the 25K, I'll probably have a smaller selection at my aid station this year--but will definitely have a cooler and some ice-cold powerades.

Thanks all for the well-wishes!

To say I was freaked out after reading the spiderweb comment is an understatement. All I can think of is the spider scene in " Lord of the Rings". Better you than me. Good luck with the race and healing.

From MarcE on Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 18:15:20 from 204.16.82.120

Doone - that's funny! It wasn't quite that bad. I don't like spiders. (I spent a few hours today cleaning off my back porch, and killed 2 black widows. I try to find them before the kids do.) Riding on a dark trail in the middle of no where (sometimes 3 miles from the nearest road, after dark is a little...scary in itself. I kept hoping nobody was on the trail..I would not have seen them.) I definitely need a light if I do that again.

It's about 7 hours until my 25K tonight. (I'm very glad it's not 50K)

La Scorchita starts 3 hrs from now! GOOD LUCK! I will think of you in my sleep/dream. Have you seen Inception?

HAVE FUN running with Ty! Can't wait to read your report!

From MarcE on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 14:41:17 from 204.16.82.120

Smooth - Yes, we saw Inception Friday night. I really enjoyed it. Have you seen it?

From Smooth on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 00:10:26 from 174.23.218.43

Yes, we saw it last Sat with the fam. My boys went back to see it again yesterday. We love it! Very well done. wouldn't it be cool if we can train in our dreams while we sleep!
